Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins were less than seconds away from shutting out the Utica Comets, but thanks to a pair or former Penguins came away with a 2-1 shootout loss on Friday night.

The Penguins (30-20-3-5) carried a 1-0 lead into the final minute of play thanks to a Spencer Machacek goal that came 1:12 into the second period. The tally was Machacek's seventh in 10 games since joining the Penguins, and his 16th of the season overall.

The 1-0 advantage held until former Penguin forward Brandon DeFazio beat Peter Mannino with 9.7 seconds remaining to tie the game up for Utica (25-26-3-4).

The 1-1 tie held into the shootout, where Mannino and Joacim Eriksson each stopped the first four shots they faced. But another former Penguin - Cal O'Reilly - beat Mannino in the fifth round, and Eriksson snuffed Jayson Megna's attempt to give the home team a 2-1 victory in the first game between the clubs in New York state.

The Penguins continue their five-game road swing on Saturday night when they face the Hamilton Bulldogs at 7:00pm. Good seats for all Penguins home games are available at the Mohegan Sun Arena box office, online at TicketMaster.com, or by calling 800-745-3000.

Group rates, flex books and mini-plans are available directly from the Penguins ticket office by calling 570-208-7367.
