Portland Pirates News Release

Lewiston, ME- The Portland Pirates was thwarted in their comeback attempt by Albany Friday night as the Devils beat the Pirates 4-3 in a shootout. Jordan Martinook, Brendan Shinnimin and Tobias Rieder scored for the Pirates while Mark Visentin made 33 saves in the defeat.

The Pirates started another game striking quickly, scoring just 26 seconds into the game. James Melindy started the play by getting the puck to Brett Hextall who fed Martinook in the neutral zone, allowing Martinook to streak up the right wing boards before swooping in on Keith Kincaid and beating him on the blocker side.

Scott Timmins would even the score at 10:40 in the first after a turnover behind the net found its way to his stick. Timmins, standing inside the right circle, fired a shot past Visentin making it 1-1.

In the second, the Devils quickly took a two goal lead, scoring twice in the first four minutes of the period. At 1:38, Adam Larsson sat behind the Pirates cage, eventually feeding the puck to Visentin's left to Reid Boucher who one-timed the pass into the back of the net. Then, Tim Sestito made it 3-1, scoring off of a face-off from the left dot, beating Visentin through the legs. But the Pirates would answer with a great effort play from Shinnimin. After Connor Murphy was called or boarding, Shinnimin, out with the penalty killing unit, poked the puck away from the Devils player, skated past him and beat Kincaid to the blocker side, all while fighting off the back-checking Albany player. The shorthanded tally marked Shinnimin's fifth goal in his last four games and gives him 12 on the season.

In the third, the Pirates were only able to manage three shots on goal, but made one of them count when Rieder scored on the power play. Andy Miele skated the puck into the neutral zone, dishing it cross-ice to Tim Kennedy along the left wing boards. Kennedy side stepped a defenseman to break into the zone and fed the puck to the right side where Rieder received it and fired the puck off the far post and in.

In overtime, the Pirates controlled the puck well, spending some time in the Albany zone, but were unable to capitalize, sending them into a shootout, the first shootout at the Colisee since Jan. 24 against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. In the shootout, Andy Miele and Brandon Yip both scored, but Boucher, Joe Whitney and Stefan Matteau all scored, handing the Devils the win.
