St. John's IceCaps News Release
IceCaps Care and the Williams Family Foundation donated $25,000 to five local charities during the month of February.
The Coalition of Persons with Disabilities Newfoundland and Labrador (COD-NL), St. Paul's Junior High Field Project, Eating Disorder Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador, Waves of Change and the MacMorran Community Centre all received $5,000 to support their endeavours in this province.
"We are so thankful for IceCaps Care and the Williams Family Foundation's continuous support and care to persons with disabilities," said Jerry Weir, President of COD-NL. "With their generosity, COD-NL continues to provide disability education, awareness and influence policies in our province around disabilities."
St. Paul's Junior High will use the funding to purchase sports equipment for a new multi-purpose recreation field currently under construction.
"Every dollar is needed for the completion of this community field and we are thankful that IceCaps Care and the Williams Family Foundation have taken an interest in this amazing project," said St. Paul's Field Project committee member Donna Curran.
Paul Thomey, Executive Director of the Eating Disorder Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador, says the funds will help his organization to continue to serve the estimated 8,000 Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who struggle with eating disorders.
"This generous support from IceCaps Care and the Williams Family Foundation helps us offer support through our counselling services to families of the thousands of people in our province who suffer from some form of eating disorder," said Mr. Thomey.
Waves of Change is an organization that erected a memorial community park in Lamaline last summer to commemorate the disastrous tidal wave of 1929 that struck the Burin Peninsula.
"The donation means that we can now add to our memorial park with a multipurpose court and on-going maintenance to be able to adequately serve every member of our communities," said committee member Heather Cull. "This donation ensures that we are able to continue with our park and ensure that our children, as well as all community members are able to enjoy Waves of Change to the fullest."
Donna Connors, Director of Programs and Services at the MacMorran Community Centre, says the support from IceCaps Care and the Williams Family Foundation will help sustain the centre's after-school program which services 40 children from Grades 1-6.
"Funding from IceCaps Care and the Williams Family Foundation will help sustain this education and recreation-focused initiative to get children writing, reading and learning at an early age while having fun and exercising at the same time," said Connors.
