San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO — San Diego Gulls veteran forward Mark Pederson has been named to the All ECHL Second Team, the league announced Thursday.

Pederson, 36, leads the ECHL with 44 goals and is tied for the league lead with 18 power-play markers. Overall, he has 81 points (44g 37a), which leads the Gulls and is fourth in the ECHL. The veteran left-winger is also tied for fourth in the league with eight game-winning goals and is tied for fifth with 32 power-play points (18g, 14a).

From late December to early February, Pederson put together a 20-game point streak, which is second only to teammate Sylvain Deschatelets' league-high 23-game point streak. He also set a franchise record with a nine-game goal-scoring streak, which ties an ECHL season high.

This is Pederson's second season with the Gulls. He came to San Diego after spending the previous seven years playing in Europe. In 2002-03 Pederson was named as the West Coast Hockey's League Forward of the Year and Playoff MVP. He was also selected to the All-WCHL team.

During his 16-year career, Pederson has led his team in points and goals six different seasons. He was a first round selection (15th pick overall) of the Montreal Canadiens in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft. Pederson played parts of five seasons in the NHL with Montreal, Philadelphia, San Jose and Detroit.

"What can you say about Mark Pederson?" Gulls head coach and general manager Steve Martinson said. "He's obviously a great impact player, but he does so many other things. It's not just the goals, points and on-ice accolades. He is a leader on and off the ice and has been great with the younger players on this team. This award is a testament to the kind of player and person Mark really is."

The players named to the All-ECHL First Team were Atlantic City's Scott Stirling and Luke Curtin, Pensacola's Corey Neilson, Louisiana's Ben Storey, Columbia's Tim Smith and Mississippi's Steffon Walby. The other players named to the All-ECHL Second Team were Louisiana's Derek Gustafson, Mississippi's Jim Baxter, Las Vegas' Jason McBain, Florida's Brian McCullough and Wheeling's Jason Jaffray.

The selections were determined in a vote of ECHL coaches, who were each asked to select a goaltender, two defensemen and three forwards.

On Wednesday, Greg Barber was named to the ECHL All-Rookie Team.
