Payton Powers Knights Past Mets 8-7 on Wednesday

(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) -- Center fielder Mark Payton launched two home runs to help lead the Charlotte Knights to a thrilling 8-7 win over the Syracuse Mets in game two of the six-game series from Truist Field in Uptown Charlotte on Wednesday night. Payton's second blast of the game broke a 7-7 tie in the eighth inning and led the Knights to the victory.

Payton had one of his strongest offensive games of the season on Wednesday. In the first inning, he launched his 15th home run of the year to give the Knights an early 1-0 lead. Later in the game, with both teams tied at 7-7, he launched his 16th home run of the season on the roof of the Atrium Health Home Run Porch to give the Knights the lead. The solo blast came off of Syracuse reliever Josh Walker (0-1, 9.00), who was charged with the loss.

It was a solid offensive showing for Charlotte on Wednesday night. The team recorded 15 hits in the contest, including three long balls. Left fielder Adam Haseley jacked his 14th home run of the season in the bottom of the third inning. Catcher Carlos Pérez also had a strong day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a run scored and a home run. Nick Ciuffo, Zach Remillard and Yolbert Sánchez also chipped in with two hits apiece.

LHP John Parke started for the Knights and allowed two runs on six hits over five innings. He fanned five batters over his five frames and left with a 4-2 lead. RHP Daniel Winkler allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits over 0.2 innings pitched.

In the five-run eighth inning, Syracuse right fielder Khalil Lee launched a 453-foot solo home run off of Winkler. It was the second homer of the game for the Mets, who also received a home run from first baseman Dominic Smith in the third inning of Wednesday's game.

LHP Andrew Perez (2-2, 4.81), who got the final out in the eighth inning, earned the win for the Knights. LHP Bennett Sousa notched his fourth save after a scoreless ninth inning.

The Knights will continue the six-game home series against the Syracuse Mets (Triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets) from Truist Field in Uptown Charlotte on Thursday night.
