INDIANAPOLIS, IN. - A day after surrendering four homers in a lopsided loss, the Pawtucket Red Sox rode a long drive to an early lead in a 8-2 rout of the Indianapolis Indians Wednesday in front of 5,650 at Victory Field.

Trailing 2-1 in the top of the third inning, outfielder Bryce Brentz launched a 3-2 pitch off Indianapolis starter Brandon Cumpton to straight-away center field. The towering drive landed in a row of trees well behind the outfield wall, which stands 405 feet from home plate.

Brentz's team-leading 10th home run, raising his RBI total to a club-high 37, was made possible only because of Jonathan Diaz's hustle to prolong the inning. Batting with the bases loaded, Diaz chopped a bouncer to third but beat the relay throw to first, thereby avoiding an inning-ending double play.

Though the PawSox would eventually hit into five double plays, they continued adding to their lead to win for a fifth time in their last six games. The victory also returned them to a season-high 11 games above the .500 plateau, at 32-21.

In the fifth inning, Diaz singled home Justin Henry, who doubled, to give Pawtucket a 5-2 lead. The Sox made it 6-2 with an unearned run charged to Cumpton (L, 4-3) in the sixth, before adding on with Brandon Snyder's RBI double in the eighth and Diaz's RBI single in the ninth.

Diaz ended the day with three different run-producing at-bats, as part of a 3-for-5 effort. He was one of five PawSox who collected at least two hits, as they continued to swing the bats well against the International League leader in staff ERA.

The Indians entered with a 3.24 ERA overall, but have now allowed 40 earned runs in 61 innings (5.90) against Pawtucket.

Conversely, PawSox pitchers Graham Godfrey, Ryan Rowland-Smith and Oscar Villareal surrendered only four hits from the second inning on.

In fact, Godfrey overcame back-to-back triples by the Indians' first two hitters Chase D'Arnoud and Alex Presley, helping the Indianapolis take a 2-0 lead before an out was recorded. Making his fourth start, Godfrey (W, 4-3) retired seven of his final eight batters to earn his third victory in his last four decisions.

Rowland-Smith authored 2 2/3 scoreless innings and Villareal, in his first appearance after being activated off the disabled list, set down all four Indians he faced to close out the win.

Pawtucket is 5-2 on its current trip, which is scheduled to conclude at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday, when Steven Wright (2-2, 4.86) meets former PawSox lefty Kris Johnson (5-3, 3.78).
