Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

Norfolk, Va. - Early offense doomed the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) yet again, as the Norfolk Tides (Baltimore Orioles) scored one run in the first inning and two in the second as they went on to win on Wednesday night, 5-2. The loss dropped the RailRiders to 23-28 on the season, as Norfolk improved to 33-20.

Jason Pridie started the game off for Norfolk, and doubled on the first pitch he saw. He advanced to third on a base hit by Brandon Wood, and came around to score on a single by Buck Britton.

Zelous Wheeler started the second inning off with a walk, and was advanced home by Trayvon Robinson, who doubled to right-center field. Two outs later, Pridie hit his second double in as many innings, plating Robinson and giving the Tides the 3-0 advantage.

Norfolk tacked another run on in the sixth. Wheeler led off with a base hit, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a passed ball.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre rallied for two runs in the eighth inning. With two outs, Corban Joseph singled to right field. Following walks to Thomas Neal and Zoilo Almonte, the bases were loaded. Ronnier Mustelier followed with a base hit down the left field line, which brought Joseph and Neal home, and halved the deficit to 4-2.

The Tides got one of those runs back in the bottom of the eighth. L.J. Hoes reached on an error by shortstop Alberto Gonzalez, moved to third on a single by Zelous Wheeler, and then scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Luis Exposito. That gave the game its final margin of 5-2.

Jake Arrieta (3-2) allowed just one hit over five shutout innings to earn the win for Norfolk. It was his first start since May 7, after he was called up by Baltimore to fill a relief role, but was never used. Jairo Asencio retired the side in order in the ninth to record his 12th save of the season.

Kelvin Perez (0-3) made a spot start for SWB, and lasted into the fifth inning. It was his longest outing since 2010 when he was with Class-A Charleston, but he allowed three runs on eight hits, and was handed the loss.

With the back-to-back wins, Norfolk has earned at least a split in their series with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The RailRiders will try to record that split on Thursday night, when they send right-hander Caleb Cotham (0-3, 11.34) to the mound to face Norfolk's Zach Britton (2-1, 4.08). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m., with pregame coverage getting underway at 6:05 p.m. on NEPA Sports Radio - The GAME, Northeast PA's largest sports radio network: 100.7 FM, 1340 WYCK-AM, 1400 WICK-AM, 1440 WCDL-AM and 106.7 FM.
