Braves Beat Chiefs, 10-1, on Wednesday

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, dropped the third game of a four game set to Gwinnett 10-1, on Wednesday. The Braves put up a pair of five-run innings en route to the victory.

Syracuse (22-30) got on the board early. In the bottom of the first inning, Will Rhymes worked a two-out walk. Chris Marrero followed with an RBI double to the center-field wall to give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead.

The lead wouldn't last long, though. In the top of the second, Brandon Boggs led off with a home run that bounced off Chris Rahl's glove and went over the right-field fence. After a walk and two straight singles, the bases were loaded for the pitcher, Yohan Flande. He hit a soft grounder to second base, but Rhymes bobbled the ball for an error and a run scored on the play. Todd Cunningham then singled in a run to make the score 3-1. Following a run-scoring, one-out walk by Joey Terdoslavich, Ernesto Mejia hit a sacrifice fly to left field to give Gwinnett (24-30) a 5-1 lead.

That wouldn't be the only big inning for the Braves, though. They led off the fourth with back-to-back singles. Terdoslavich then doubled to center field and scored both runners. The following batter, Mejia, homered over the center-field wall. Three batters later, Cunningham walked with the bases loaded to make the score 10-1.

Flande, meanwhile, pitched very well for the Braves. He shut out the Chiefs over his final six innings, allowing just one run on two hits.

In the loss, Jeff Mandel pitched brilliantly for Syracuse. He came in for Accardo in the four and tossed four-and-one-third innings of shutout ball, striking out four.

Syracuse and Gwinnett finish their series on Thursday at NBT Bank Stadium. The Chiefs turn to right-hander Ross Ohlendorf, while left-hander Sean Gilmartin goes for the Braves. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00.
