Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Norfolk, VA) - Allen Webster tossed eight brilliant innings in the longest outing for a Pawtucket hurler this season and Corey Brown homered and drove home three as the PawSox topped the Norfolk Tides, 7-2, Friday night in the opener of a four-game series at Harbor Park.
Webster (3-2) combined with reliever Tommy Layne on a four-hitter as Pawtucket (28-28) began an eight-game road trip on a winning note. The right-hander allowed three hits including a solo home run to Chris Marrero in the seventh. Webster struck out seven and walked just one while throwing 102 pitches.
The PawSox struck for a pair of first inning runs against Norfolk ace starting pitcher Kevin Gausman (1-3) when Brown drilled a two-run home run off the video board in right field. It was his team-high-matching eighth of the season and third in the past week.
Brown would later record an RBI on a fielder's choice grounder in a four-run eighth inning. Travis Shaw's two-out RBI single against reliever Edgmer Escalona in the fifth made the score 3-0 Pawtucket. It scored Brown, who lined a one-out double earlier in the inning.
Justin Henry's two-run single highlighted the four-run rally in the eighth against lefty Kelvin De La Cruz. Brown, Shaw, Christian Vazquez and Shannon Wilkerson each recorded a pair of the PawSox' 11 hits.
Game two of the series is slated for a 7:05 pm first pitch on Saturday night. Right-hander Steven Wright (NR), who is on MLB injury rehab for the Red Sox, is expected to be activated and get the ball for manager Kevin Boles, while righty Suk-min Yoon (1-5, 6.32) is expected to start for the Tides. Radio coverage on 920 AM (WHJJ) and also streaming online begins at 6:50 pm.
Following the road trip the PawSox return to McCoy Stadium for an eight-game homestand, beginning with four games against Louisville beginning on Saturday, June 7th. Good seats are still available at the McCoy Stadium box office, by calling (401) 724-7300 or by visiting pawsox.com.
