Chiefs Survive Late Rally, Edge Bisons
May 30, 2014 - International League (IL1)
Syracuse Mets News Release
The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, began their first series of the season against the Buffalo Bisons with 5-4 win at Coca-Cola Field on Friday night. The Chiefs scored all five of their runs in the fourth inning and staved off a ninth-inning rally to stay in first place in the International League North Division.
Syracuse (30-24) broke open a scoreless tie against right-hander Esmil Rogers after three innings of no-hit ball from each team. With one out, Will Rhymes started the rally with a walk, and Steven Souza, Jr. singled to left field. Designated hitter Jhonatan Solano then scored Rhymes from third base with an RBI single to left, giving the Chiefs a 1-0 lead. Second baseman Zach Walters followed with a run-scoring double down the right-field line to bring in Souza and end Rogers' night. After right-hander Shawn Hill entered and walked Destin Hood, center fielder Brian Goodwin grounded a ball to second base. Ryan Goins picked up the ball and threw wildly home for an error, bringing home both Walters and Hood on the play. Brandon Laird followed with a single, scoring Hood to give Syracuse a 5-0 lead.
Roenicke made the lead hold up through five innings. He allowed just three hits and two walks, striking out two and earning his first win of the season.
Buffalo (26-25) would finally gain some offense in the seventh inning. With one out, Munenori Kawasaki singled against left-hander Zach Jackson. Kenny Wilson followed with a ground ball back to the mound that Jackson threw away toward second base for an error. After a Jonathan Diaz walk loaded the bases, center fielder Darin Mastroianni blooped a double down the right-field line, scoring Kawasaki and Wilson to cut the lead to 5-2. Ryan Mattheus then entered and struck out Goins, but the right-hander uncorked a wild pitch with Jared Goedert batting, bringing home Diaz for the Bisons' third run. Mattheus would then induce a Goedert groundout to end the inning.
The Bisons rallied in the bottom of the ninth against left-hander Mike Gonzalez. Wilson walked to start the inning, and pinch-hitter Andy LaRoche followed with a single. Mastroianni then walked to load the bases with no outs. Gonzalez induced a foul pop out to third base from Goins for the inning's first out. Jared Goedert followed with a fielder's choice groundout to first base, with Wilson scoring to cut the lead to 5-4 and Mastroianni forced out at second base. Dan Johnson followed by lining the first pitch into center field, but Goodwin ran it down to preserve the win.
Syracuse and Buffalo resume their series on Saturday afternoon at 1:05. Chiefs right-hander Taylor Jordan and Bisons right-hander Deck McGuire are the scheduled starters.
