Red Wings Blank G-Braves, 7-0

ROCHESTER, NY - In a battle of two second place teams in the International League, the Rochester Red Wings (29-24) shut out the Gwinnett Braves (29-24) by a 7-0 score in game one of the four-game series at Frontier Field.

The loss dropped the G-Braves to 2.5 games behind Durham in the IL South Division, as the Bulls edged Lehigh Valley 5-4 on Friday night.

Both starting pitchers, Cody Martin of Gwinnett and Kris Johnson of Rochester, were in control through the first three and a half innings. In the bottom of the fourth, Martin got into trouble.

With one out, Brad Nelson doubled over the head of Todd Cunningham in center field. Former G-Braves outfielder Wilkin Ramirez followed with a single to left scoring Nelson for a 1-0 lead. After Martin recorded the second out, Eric Fryer doubled to right plating Ramirez for a 2-0 lead. Pedro Florimon knocked in Fryer with a single to increase the Red Wings' advantage to 3-0, and Eric Farris delivered a single to right scoring Florimon for a 4-0 lead.

The Red Wings added a run against Martin in the bottom of the sixth. Fryer led off with a single, but was forced at second on a ground ball hit by Florimon. Farris then smacked a double to left, scoring Florimon from first to raise the lead to 5-0.

Wirfin Obispo entered from the Gwinnett bullpen to begin the bottom of the seventh and quickly got into trouble. He issued a leadoff walk to Chris Colabello and an RBI double to Ramirez to make it 6-0 Rochester. Doug Bernier followed with a single to center scoring Ramirez for a 7-0 lead.

Martin (L, 3-4) worked 6.0 innings, allowing five runs on 12 hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Obispo went 1.0 inning with two hits, two earned runs and one walk. Mitch Atkins worked 1.0 inning with one hit and one walk.

Johnson (W, 5-2) scattered four hits across 7.0 scoreless innings, walked two and struck out five. Ryan Pressly worked the final 2.0 innings for Rochester, striking out two.

The G-Braves mustered only four singles on the night, with Tyler Pastornicky going 2-for-4. Joey Terdoslavich and Christian Bethancourt added the other hits. Jose Constanza saw his 11-game hitting streak end with an 0-for-3 night, while Phil Gosselin went 0-for-4 to end his eight-game hitting streak.

Rochester pounded out 15 hits, the most allowed by the Gwinnett pitching staff this season. Ramirez (3-for-4, 2 RBIs), Farris (3-for-4, 2 RBIs), Nelson (3-for-5), Bernier (2-for-4) and Fryer (2-for-4) all had multi-hit games.

The Gwinnett Braves and Rochester Red Wings meet in game two of the four-game series on Saturday night at Frontier Field. Left-hander Daniel Rodriguez (4-5, 3.20) is scheduled to start for the G-Braves, while the Red Wings will counter with right-hander Trevor May (4-3, 3.00). First pitch is set for 7:05 PM.
