Gwinnett Stripers News Release
Tonight's Game: The Gwinnett Braves continue an eight-game road trip (2-2 at PAW, 4 at ROC) with the opener of a four-game series at Rochester tonight. After going 10-3 in 13 games from 5/6 to 5/19, the G-Braves are 4-5 in their last nine games. Gwinnett trails Durham (32-23) by 1.5 games for first place in the IL South Division and leads the IL Wild Card standings by 1.0 game over series opponent Rochester (28-24). With a victory tonight, the G-Braves would snap a five-game losing streak at the hands of the Red Wings (went 1-7 last season)...the club hasn't beat Rochester since 6/6/13 at Coolray Field (11-3 win) and hasn't won at Frontier Field since 5/22/12 (3-1 win).
G-Braves Earn Split in Pawtucket: Former PawSox' RHP Zach Stewart (W, 3-2) was sharp against his old club last night, allowing three runs over 7.1 innings to lead the G-Braves to a 6-3 win over Pawtucket at McCoy Stadium. Gwinnett took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning as Tyler Pastornicky (2-for-4, 2B, R) doubled and scored on a throwing error by PawSox' starter Jeremy Kehrt (L, 0-4). The G-Braves broke it open in the seventh, scoring four runs off RHP Jose Valdez. Mark Hamilton (1-for- 3, 2B, R) doubled and scored on a throwing error by Valdez, and Edward Salcedo (1-for-4, HR, 3 RBI) added a three-run home run to left-center. In the eighth, Phil Gosselin (2-for-4, HR, RBI) blasted a solo homer to left off RHP Chris Resop to raise the lead to 6-0. Stewart didn't allow a run while in the game, but exited with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh...LHP Atahualpa Severino came on and served up a bases-clearing double to Garin Cecchini, making it 6-3. Severino avoided further damage over 0.2 IP and RHP Pedro Beato (S, 2) worked a scoreless ninth to finish the victory.
