Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

Jon Weber joined the Winnipeg Goldeyes with the pedigree of being a go-to hitter. On Friday night, the 5,812 fans at Shaw Park got to see just that.

Weber hit two home runs - totaling five RBI - as the Winnipeg Goldeyes (23-17) beat the Lincoln Saltdogs (20-21) 9-5.

"I can't just sit here and say my hitting is fixed," says Weber. "It's a work in progress and it's definitely getting better. It's coming around."

While Weber was the star for Winnipeg, Lincoln had its share of chances on Friday, as they totaled 11 hits and had numerous opportunities to score runs. In the seventh inning, the Saltdogs, trailing 8-4, loaded the bases and scored a run on an Ian Thomas walk. After a strikeout though, the base runners were left stranded. Lincoln left seven batters on base in the game, compared to four for Winnipeg.

Meanwhile, for the first time since joining the Goldeyes, starting pitcher Luis Villarreal struggled. Riding a 0.48 ERA into Friday, Villarreal gave up eight of the 11 Lincoln hits in five innings and allowed his first home run of the season, a Joe Ramos solo shot in the fourth. Thanks to his hitters though, he was credited with the win and improves to a perfect 4-0 on the year, with a still-impressive ERA of 1.90.

The infield also played well for the Goldeyes, turning key double plays and pulling highlight plays like the Louis Ott barehanded throw that stopped a leadoff bunt attempt in the third.

"Defense and pitching wins games for us," says Weber. "We can hit the ball. We have good pitching and good defense, and after that, it's just left to us hitters to swing and hit the ball."

The Goldeyes will take on the Saltdogs again Saturday night in the second game of the three-game series. First pitch is at 6 p.m. and great seats are available by calling 1-855-GOLDEYE, visiting ticketmaster.ca, or by visiting any Ticketmaster outlet, including the one in Shaw Park.
