Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
FARGO, N.D. - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (21-19) fell to the Sioux City Explorers (20-21) 3-2 in twelve innings on Friday Night at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo, ND.
Alex Caldera started the game for the RedHawks and was fantastic for his second straight start. Caldera pitched seven innings of shutout baseball on June 18th. He was able to pick up right where he left off as he only gave up one hit and one run in eight innings.
The RedHawks started the scoring by plating two runs in the third inning. Brian Ruggiano led off the inning by reaching base on an error. Mike Coles blasted a double in the right center gap to bring in Ruggiano. Coles later advanced to second on a groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly by Nic Jackson. After that, the Explorers starter, Ty Marotz, turned the game into a pitcher's duel going eight innings as well, while allowing six hits and two runs (both unearned).
The RedHawks took a 2-1 lead into the ninth inning but were unable to slam the door as the Explorers were able to manufacture a run off an error, a single, a walk, and a sac fly. With that run, the game was headed for extra innings.
Neither team would score again until the top of the twelfth inning. The Explorers used a leadoff double by Tyler Goodro and a pair of sacrifices to gain a 3-2 lead.
Carlo Cota responded with a leadoff double of his own. Jason James was hit on the next pitch. Then, Phil Britton attempted a sacrifice bunt but all of the runners were able to reach safely leaving the bases loaded with no outs, but the Explorers were able to escape the jam with the win thanks to a short pop out and a double play.
Eddie Delacruz pitched three scoreless innings in relief to earn the win. Kevin Fuqua pitched 3.1 innings but ended up with the loss after allowing the game-winning run. Cephas Howard got the only batter he faced to ground into a double play for his first save of the year.
The RedHawks will play the second game of their three-game series against the Sioux City Explorers on Saturday. Game time is 6:00 pm. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling 701-235-6161, online at www.fmredhawks.com, or at the Ticket Office during business hours.
