Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats couldn't hold a 3-0 lead in the opener of a seven-game roadtrip, suffering a 4-3 loss to the Sioux Falls Pheasants in South Dakota to halt a six-game win streak.
Facing one of the top pitchers in the American Association this season, the RailCats took advantage of a leadoff walk in the third. Chris Carrara walked, moved to third on an error, and scored an unearned run when Mike Massaro singled past the drawn in infield.
Ben Moore, who entered the game leading the American Association in strikeouts and ranking second in ERA, allowed single runs in the fourth and fifth as well as the RailCats built a 3-0 advantage. Toddric Johnson doubled to leadoff the fourth, and crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Carrara led off with a single in the fifth and Adam Klein followed with a double. Carrara scored for the second time on a sacrifice fly from Massaro.
The lead held for starter Jack Frawley, who worked around a bases loaded jam in the first thanks to a diving double play started by Carrara at third, until the seventh. Frawley carried a shutout into the seventh before allowing a single to Francisco Leandro. Henry Contreras followed with a walk and Frawley exited with Zeb Engle coming on in relief. Engle allowed a bunt single to Hunter Jobes to load the bases before recording the first out of the frame. Joe Anthonsen put Sioux Falls on the board with a single to center. James Baker relieved Engle and posted a strikeout for the second out, but Gus Milner cleared the bases with a double to left, capping the inning and handing Sioux Falls a 4-3 advantage.
Frawley pitched six innings in a no decision, allowing two runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out four. Moore fanned eight and tossed seven to earn the win for Sioux Falls, as the RailCats stranded the tying run on base in the eighth and ninth. Massaro and Johnson each posted two hits in the game for the RailCats.
The series will continue on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. RHP Nolan Nicholson (2-4, 5.53) starts for the RailCats (23-18), who continue to lead the Central. Sioux Falls will counter with RHP Barry Fowler (1-1, 4.44), who pitched against the RailCats with Winnipeg earlier this year.
