
Eight-run Captains ninth sink Sox 16-8

AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Sox were tied with the Shreveport-Bossier Captains in the eighth inning on Friday night, but the Captains scored eight runs in the ninth to defeat the Sox 16-8 in front of 2,940 fans at the Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium.
Sox reliever Gary Perinar (0-1) got the loss, allowing all five batters he faced to reach and score without retiring a batter. Captains reliever Dan Griffin (2-0) got the win, retiring both batters he faced in the eighth inning.
The Captains started the scoring in the first inning as Mike Provencher singled, stole second, went to third on a single and scored on a Palmer Karr sacrifice fly for a one-run lead.
In the bottom half of the first, the Sox took the lead. Matt Tucker reached on a two-base error with one out, followed by a hit-by-pitch to Cyle Hankerd to put two runners on. Lee Cruz came up and hit a three-run homerun to right-center field for a 3-1 Sox advantage.
Shreveport-Bossier got one of the runs back in the third as Provencher led off with a double and scored on a Bryan Sabatella RBI single. Amarillo quickly responded in the third as Van Pope struck out but reached on a dropped third strike. Tim Alberts followed with an RBI double to score Pope, while Benji Johnson hit a two-run homerun for a four-run Sox lead. The Captains added two runs in the fourth inning on a two-RBI double by Brian Peterson for a 6-4 score.
Amarillo added another run in the sixth on an RBI double by Pope for a three-run lead, but Shreveport-Bossier tied the game in the top of the seventh. Provencher led off with a hit-by-pitch while Robert Perry followed with a two-run homerun. Andres Rodriguez followed with a single and scored on a Karr RBI double to give the game a 7-7 tie score.
Following another Perry RBI in the eigth to give the Captains a lead, the Sox tied the game in the bottom half on a Lee Cruz RBI single.
Then came the ninth inning.
Shreveport-Bossier sent 12 batters to the plate and scored eight runs off five hits and an error for a 16-8 Captains lead. Amarillo could not score additionally in the ninth to fall by that score.
With the win, the Sox fall to 19-20 while the Captains improve to 22-17. Saturday, Amarillo will take on Shreveport-Bossier for the second game of a three-game set at 7:05pm with the Aqua One Pre-Game Show set to begin at 6:50pm.
