P-Bruins Tame Tigers 6-1 at Home

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins beat the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 6-1 on Friday evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The P-Bruins received a pair of goals from Jordan Smotherman and additional strikes from Jamie Arniel, Jeremy Reich, Yury Alexandrov and Lane MacDermid. A total of 11 different Providence players collected points in the victory, the P-Bruins' first on home-ice in six tries this season.

Providence and Bridgeport came out with some big hits in the opening minutes of the contest. There were shoves and words exchanged, but the gloves weren't dropped until the 6:09 mark when rookie Antoine Roussel squared off with Travis Hamonic. Both players received five minutes for fighting on the play. The P-Bruins largely dominated the offensive play of the period, intercepting the Sound Tigers' offensive and neutral zone attempts, but couldn't find the back of Mikko Koskinen's net. Providence ended the period with a good opportunity when an Andrew Bodnarchuk shot went off the post.

Play started off slow in the second, but continued to be scrappy. There was an onslaught of penalties for both Providence and Bridgeport, beginning with a roughing penalty called on Jeremy Yablonski for throwing some punches at Nathan McIver. Providence was able to kill the penalties and keep the momentum from the first period and controlled all aspects of play. Arniel put the P-Bruins on the board at the 9:51 mark for his fourth goal of the season when he was able to surprise Koskinen from behind the net. Veteran Wyatt Smith picked up the lone assist on the play. Just 15 seconds later, Kirk MacDonald found Reich in front, who shot it past a blank Koskinen. Bodnarchuk also assisted on the goal. Providence continued to dominate the play and Joe Colborne found a rushing Alexandrov coming down the slot, and the Russian rookie then sailed one over Koskinen's shoulder to put the P-Bruins up 3-0 going into the second intermission.

The P-Bruins scored early and often in the third period, lighting the lamp three times. Smotherman started the scoring at the 5:28 mark when he sent one over Koskinen's shoulder. Steven Kampfer and Arniel assisted on the play. Bridgeport's frustration was evident as they were sent to the box twice during the period. Smotherman picked up his second of the night, a power play goal, off a pass from Arniel at the 17:26 mark. Kampfer earned another assist on the play. MacDermid put the game away for the P-Bruins when he was able to find the puck in traffic and slide it underneath Koskinen's pads at the 17:55 mark to make it 6-1. Zach Hamill picked up his second assist of the season on the goal and Jeff LoVecchio earned a helper as well.

Michael Hutchinson earned the win blocking 26 or 27 attempts. Koskinen stopped 31 shots for the loss. The P-Bruins went 1-for-6 on the power play and 6-for-7 on the penalty kill. Providence out-shot Bridgeport 37-27.

The P-Bruins are on the road the next two days, Saturday at the Portland Pirates and Sunday to wrap up their season series with the Albany Devils. Providence returns to The Dunk on Friday, November 12 against the Abbotsford Heat at 7:05 p.m. for Ear Warmer Night. Ear warmers are free to the first 1,000 fans.
