Pirates Ups Home Winning Streak to Seven Games

PORTLAND, ME - Matt Ellis and Mark Parrish each collected a goal and an assist to lead the Portland Pirates to a 5-2 win over the Adirondack Phantoms in an American Hockey League game played tonight in front of 6,783 at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Dennis Persson, Dennis McCauley and Luke Adam rounded out the scoring for the Pirates, who extended their season-opening winning streak to seven games and improved to 10-3-0-0 overall.

David Laliberte and Denis Hamel scored for Adirondack, who extended their winless streak to eight games (0-7-1-0) and are now 2-9-1-0 overall.

The two teams played even through the first period as Persson netted his first of the year to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead. The opening goal was answered with three minutes remaining in the opening stanza as Laliberte netted a power-play goal to send the two teams into the intermission tied at one. McCauley's goal six minutes into the second lifted the Pirates into a 2-1 lead after two. Adam, with his league-leading 10th of the season, and Ellis (shorthanded) scored in the opening six minutes of the third to give the Pirates a 4-1 advantage. Hamel and Parrish traded goals in the final 11 minutes to complete the scoring.

The Phantoms out shot the Pirates 30-19 as David Leggio posted the win to improve to 6-0 on the season.

The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the game were all from the Pirates. Ellis was the first, Parrish the second and Persson the third.

The Pirates complete the weekend tomorrow (Saturday) night in another Bud Light Hockey Night in Portland when the Providence Bruins visit the Civic Center for a 7 p.m. start.
