Peoria Rivermen News Release
The Milwaukee Admirals came from behind to force overtime and then edged the Peoria Rivermen in a shootout 3-2 on Friday night at the Bradley Center. Ben Bishop made 36 saves in regulation and overtime but the Admirals got the better of him in the shootout to earn the extra-point and extend Peoria's winless streak to four games.
The Rivermen struck first on the first point of the year from Ryan Reaves at 14:34 of the first period. Dave Scatchard, who spent last season with the Admirals, placed a pass into the slot for Reaves who beat Scott Ford to the puck and backhanded it home. Chris Porter also added an assist on the play.
With only 28 seconds left in the opening frame T.J. Hensick buried his third of the year, on the power play, from Phil McRae and Graham Mink. Hensick's wrist shot from the left circle stayed along the ice and slipped between the legs of Mark Dekanich.
The game slowed down in the second period when the Rivermen were forced to kill of five penalties in the first 13 minutes of the frame. While trying to kill off the third Admiral's power play of the frame, Linus Klasen wristed one over Bishop's glove into the top corner to bring the score to 2-1. It was Klasen's eighth of the year with Roman Josi and Jonathon Blum earning assists on the goal.
Matt Halischuk found himself in all alone on Bishop with four minutes to go in the second, but Bishop was able to get his right pad to the post before Halischuk could slide it home. Also late in the period, Mark Cundari kicked a puck away close to the goal line that got by Bishop to keep Peoria ahead 2-1.
The Rivermen were outshot 16-3 in the penalty-filled frame and were assessed 26 of their total 28 penalty minutes in the game during the second period.
The Admirals tied the game at two on a gracious bounce off the glass midway through the third. Blum went to dump the puck in, and Bishop routinely went behind the net to play it. On its way around, the puck shot out of the glass into the slot where Mark Santorelli put the puck into the empty net to tie the game.
Peoria poured it on, outshooting the Admirals 6-3, in overtime but Dekanich kept the Rivermen from ending the game before the shootout.
In the shootout, the Admirals went five times on six shots which proved to be enough to beat the Rivermen. Peoria responded with four goals on their first five shots and with a chance to extend the shootout to a seventh round Phil McRae hit the crossbar with a backhand shot to end the game.
Bishop finished with 36 saves while Dekanich stopped 27 of 29. Peoria's power play was 1-for-3 while they managed to kill off 6-of-7 Admirals advantages.
The Rivermen return home on Sunday 4:05 p.m. against their division rival the Rockford IceHogs. All kids tickets are available for just $1 and hot dogs, chips and Cokes will be available for $1 each from 3-4 p.m. For more information visit www.rivermen.net, call 309-676-1040 or stop by the Rivermen office inside the Peoria Civic Center.
