Norfolk Admirals News Release

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Marc-Antoine Pouliot scored in the third round of the shootout and goaltender Cedrick Desjardins stopped all five shootout attempts against him as the Norfolk Admirals (6-2-1-1) defeated the Charlotte Checkers (4-6-1-2), 3-2, on Friday night at the Time Warner Cable Arena in the first ever American Hockey League meeting between the clubs. The same two teams will meet tomorrow night at Norfolk Scope Arena at 7:15 p.m. in the second of 12 regular season matchups.

Desjardins stopped all but two of Charlotte's 29 shots through regulation and overtime and earned his third win of the season. Pouliot also scored in regulation while Johan Harju had a goal and an assist for the visitors.

Charlotte took a 1-0 lead just 1:19 into the first period. Drayson Bowman picked off a pass in the neutral zone and entered the attacking zone along the left wing. He sent a slap shot from the left point that went off the crossbar and into the net behind the glove of Desjardins.

The Admirals tied the game at 1-1 with just 31 seconds left in the opening frame. Pouliot skated into the attacking zone along the left wing and sent a pass to Juraj Simek in the slot. Simek returned the pass to Pouliot, who by then was closing in on the goalmouth near the bottom of the left circle. Pouliot sent a quick shot past the right leg of Charlotte goaltender Mike Murphy for his fourth goal of the season.

After a scoreless second period, Norfolk took a 2-1 lead by scoring on its first shot of the third period. Harju picked off a Checkers pass behind the Charlotte net. He attempted a wraparound shot from near Murphy's left leg that traveled into the crease, caromed off the skate of a Checkers skater and went across the goal line near the opposite post. The goal at 2:58 was Harju's team-leading sixth marker of the season.

The lead lasted less than ten minutes, as Charlotte tied the game at 2-2 on a power play goal. Chris Terry sent a shot from the high slot that was blocked in the low slot. The puck landed at the feet of Riley Nash in the goalmouth, and Nash chipped a shot past Desjardins at 11:16.

Neither team found the back of the net for the remainder of regulation or in overtime.

In the shootout, Pouliot scored Norfolk's lone goal on four attempts. Desjardins stopped Charlotte captain Bryan Rodney in the fifth round to seal the victory for the Admirals by stopping all five Checkers shooters.

Cedrick Desjardins (29 shots, 27 saves) earned the win. Mike Murphy (28 shots, 26 saves) was saddled with the shootout loss.

Norfolk was 0-5 on the power play. Charlotte was 1-4.
