Springfield Falcons News Release

The Springfield Falcons continued their hot streak beating the Syracuse Crunch 3-2 in a shootout on Friday night at the MassMutual Center. The Falcons have now earned a point in six of their last seven games going 5-1-0-1 in that span and they improved their record to 7-4-0-1 on the season.

The Falcons and Crunch played a very entertaining contest that went back and forth with scoring chances with Falcons goaltender Gustaf Wesslau making his North American pro debut and Syracuse's Timo Pielmeier also playing very well between the pipes.

"I was excited about playing, it had been a long time and overall the guys played very well in front of me tonight," said Wesslau, who had been recovering from an injury throughout training camp and the first 11 games of the year. "It was nice to face some shots and get back on the ice, but overall it's nice to get the win."

After it looked like the two teams would play a scoreless first period, Michael Blunden one-timed a Cody Goloubef pass behind Pielmeier giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead with just 30-seconds remaining in the opening frame.

Syracuse battled back early in the second period when Nicolas Deschamps scored his fifth goal of the year at 1:46 of the middle period, but the Falcons regained their lead at 2-1 when Matt Calvert tipped in a John Moore slap shot at 12:45 of the second period on the power play.

With the Falcons in control late in the third period, Syracuse took advantage of a bad bounce for Springfield in their defensive zone and Rob Bordson tucked one past Wesslau evening the score at 2-2.

In the shootout, Calvert gave the Falcons a one-goal advantage, followed by Trevor Smith scoring for Syracuse keeping the game deadlocked. Tomas Kubalik scored in the sixth round, while Wesslau stopped five of six shooters in the extra session.
