Former Monster Hands Lake Erie Overtime Loss

Lake Erie built a three-goal lead off three power play tallies in the first period of Friday's game at Quicken Loans Arena, but the Chicago Wolves went on a five-goal run to hand the Monsters a 6-5 overtime loss.

Former Lake Erie standout, Darren Haydar, recorded three straight goals for the Wolves, including the overtime winner with less than one second remaining.

Despite the loss, Lake Erie obtained a point by forcing overtime, and with their first overtime loss of the season, their overall record stands at 5-5-1-1.

Chicago's Angelo Esposito was awarded a five-minute major, and a game misconduct, for elbowing Lake Erie's Tom Zanoski in the opening minutes of regulation. Major penalties nullify a team's chance to return to even strength after giving up a goal, which allowed the Monsters to score three straight on the ensuing penalty.

Ray Macias notched his first of the season to put the Monsters up 1-0 at 4:57 of the opening period. Assists were credited to Mark Olver and Ryan Stoa.

Stoa then scored his first of the season, as he was assisted by Macias and rookie defenseman Joel Chouinard.

At the 7:58 mark, Mike Carman notched his first of the campaign off a pass from Chouinard, putting the Monsters up by a 3-0 count. With two assists in the game, Chouinard has recorded points (1G, 4A) in all four games he's played this season.

Chicago (6-4-1-0) got on the board at 15:41 when Jared Ross capitalized on Spencer Machacek's rebound, bringing the score to 3-1.

The Monsters regained their three-goal lead at the 16:46 mark, when Greg Mauldin set up Ben Walter with a one-timer that made the score 4-1. Walter's goal extends his point streak to six games (3G, 4A), while Mauldin's assist came as his 6th point in his last seven games.

The Wolves answered again just 49 seconds later, when Machacek scored on a wraparound from the right side of the net, ending the first period with a score of 4-2.

After the first period, Chicago goaltender Peter Mannino was replaced by Edward Pasquale. Mannino stopped 10 of the 14 shots he faced.

With four goals in the first period, the Monsters set a season high for goals scored in a single frame.

Just 2:44 into the second period, Zanoski rifled a slap shot from the point to put Lake Erie up 5-2. Zanoski's goal was his first of the season, taking assists from Curtis Fraser and R.J. Anderson. After signing with Lake Erie to a professional tryout on Thursday, Anderson was appearing in his first game as a Monster.

With five goals on the night, Lake Erie set a season high for goals in a single game.

The Wolves would climb to within one before the second stanza expired. At the 13:47 mark, Akim Aliu scored off a pass from Ross, making the score 5-3. At 16:39, Haydar began a three-goal performance when he notched his fourth of the season off assists from Paul Postma and Ross.

The third period began with a 5-4 score, but Haydar struck again at 11:40 to tie the game at five goals apiece.

Both teams stood strong defensively, forcing an overtime session. In the extra five minutes, Haydar rifled a slap shot from the point to end the game, and solidify a hat trick against his former team. Less than a second was remaining on the clock when Haydar scored, assisted by his former college teammate from the University of New Hampshire, Jason Krog.

The 11 combined goals between the two teams sets a season high for a Lake Erie game this season.

Trevor Cann made 29 saves playing in his first game with the Monsters. In relief of Maninno, Pasquale made 25 saves on 26 shots through two periods.

Lake Erie will be idle on Saturday, before welcoming the Grand Rapids Griffins to Quicken Loans Arena for a 5 p.m. faceoff on Sunday.
