Providence Bruins News Release

Springfield, MA - The Providence Bruins fell to the Springfield Falcons 2-1 Saturday night. Nick Johnson scored the lone goal for the P-Bruins, while Niklas Svedberg recorded 25 saves.

Providence and Springfield exchanged chances in a wide open first period. Both teams played smart hockey, not taking many risks and waiting for their opportunity to strike. Svedberg and Falcons goalie, Mike McKenna, were ready, making save after save, frustrating the opposing shooters as the game went into the first intermission scoreless.

The second period started off the same way, Providence finally broke through at the 10:13 mark, when Johnson stole the puck at his own blue line and skate in on a breakaway, beating McKenna with the backhand for his 13th goal of the season. The lead only lasted eleven seconds, as Spencer Machacek scored his fifth goal of the season as he was on the receiving end of some pretty passing from Sean Collins and Tim Erixon. Springfield took the lead at the 17:37 mark as Machacek scored his second of the game and sixth of the season as he circled around the net to find the puck sitting in the crease before putting it into the net. Tim Miller had the lone assist on the goal as Springfield took the 2-1 lead into the second intermission.

Trailing to start the third, the P-Bruins continued to put the pressure on trying to tie the game against the league's best team. Springfield's defense held firm though and prevented the P-Bruins from getting any good chances in the period. Providence was not able to break through the Falcons defensive as Springfield held on for the 2-1 victory.

Svedberg stopped 25 of 27 shots for the P-Bruins, while McKenna finished with 26 saves for the Falcons. Providence went 0-for-3 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.

The P-Bruins return home to the Dunkin' Donuts Center Sunday, January 5 at 3:05pm against the Worcester Sharks. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a stadium cup courtesy of Cool Air Creations and Realty Associates.
