January 4, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Monsters News Release
Five different players had multi-point games as the Lake Erie Monsters (17-13-0-3) routed the Milwaukee Admirals (16-10-5-1) by a 6-1 score before a Quicken Loans Arena crowd of 9,045 Saturday night. The win caps off a two-game weekend sweep of Milwaukee for the Monsters, who got a hat trick from David van der Gulik and a four-point game from Mark Olver. Sami Aittokallio earned the victory in net, as the Monsters have now won six straight meetings against Milwaukee dating back to last season.
Joey Hishon picked up the rebound from a J.T. Wyman shot to score the Monsters first goal from the slot at 14:30 of the opening period. The goal was Hishon's fifth of the season, and was also assisted by Olver to give the Monsters a 1-0 lead. Milwaukee answered just 57 seconds later, as Simon Moser scored to tie the game at 1-1 for the Admirals.
The Monsters took control for good just 40 seconds into the second period, when van der Gulik scored his first of three goals. The veteran forward picked up his own rebound and scored his fourth goal of the season, giving the Monsters a 2-1 lead with an assist to Andrew Agozzino, who stretched his point streak to four games. van der Gulik scored on the rebound of a Mark Olver shot 8:07 later to give the Monsters a 3-1 lead on the power play, with Agozzino also collecting an assist.
Similar to the second period, van der Gulik didn't need much time to find the scoresheet in the third. At the 2:08 mark, shortly after exiting the penalty box, van der Gulik took a stretch pass from Olver, cruised in on a breakaway, and converted a nifty deke move to his backhand to complete the hat trick and give the Monsters a 4-1 lead. Brett Clark also assisted on van der Gulik's sixth goal of the season.
Karl Stollery sent a shot from the center of the blue line, with the Monsters on the power play, off the goal post, off the goaltender, and into the net to give the Monsters a 5-1 lead at 7:42 of the third period. The goal was Stollery's fifth and was assisted by Wyman.
With 9:45 left in the third period, Aittokallio and Milwaukee goalie Scott Darling dropped the gloves and fought at center ice, earning each goaltender a five-minute fighting major and a game misconduct. Calvin Pickard finished the game in net for the Monsters, stopping one shot.
Olver scored a goal to go with his three assists when he rifled a shot from the top of the right circle, off the far goal post and into the net for his ninth goal of the season, putting the Monsters ahead 6-1. Stollery and Wyman assisted on Olver's goal.
Aittokallio earned the win in net, improving his overall record to 8-6-1; he stopped 21 of 22 shots in 50:15 of action. Pickard stopped the only shot he faced in 9:45 of game action.
Darling suffered the loss for Milwaukee, and he is now 7-3-0 after stopping 21 of 26 shots. Magnus Hellberg entered the game after Darling's ejection, stopping one of two shots.
The Monsters are back on the ice in Rockford Friday at 8:00 PM Eastern; a game that airs live on ESPN 850 WKNR.
