Gernat Nets His First Two Career Goals As Barons Rally Past Rampage, 5-3

January 4, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Oklahoma City Barons News Release

Martin Gernat scored his first two professional goals as the Oklahoma City Barons overcame an early three goal deficit to rally past the San Antonio Rampage 5-3 Saturday night at Cox Convention Center.

Gernat's first goal of the night cut the San Antonio lead to 3-2 at 17:07 in second period, when Anton Lander flipped a loose puck from behind the left side of the San Antonio net towards the crease where Gernat batted it past Rampage goalie Jacob Markstrom.

With Oklahoma City leading 4-3 late in the third, Gernat tallied his second career goal, receiving an Andrew Miller pass near the right circle and firing a slap shot past Markstrom, giving the Barons a decisive 5-3 lead.

San Antonio got on the scoreboard first, when at 6:33 in the first period Joey Crabb fed Jed Ortmeyer from behind the Barons net, and Ortmeyer muscled it through a congested crease and past Bachman for a 1-0 Rampage lead.

The Rampage picked up right where they left off in the second period when Garrett Wilson drove to the net and hurried a backhand shot that deflected off Bachman to Wade Megan who slid the puck past the Barons net minder at 2:36.

At 8:35 in the second, San Antonio extended its lead to 3-0 when Matt Gilroy maneuvered around a stickless Curtis Hamilton and unloaded a slap shot that found its way over the glove of Bachman and into the back of the Barons net.

Oklahoma City began forging its comeback just 31 seconds later when Hamilton extended his point streak to a career-high four games by deflecting a Taylor Fedun slap shot from the point past Markstrom.

Later in the second, Gernat's first goal cut the San Antonio lead to 3-2.

The Barons evened the score at three goals apiece at 13:24 in the third period, when Derek Nesbitt slammed a rebound past Markstrom off an Erik Burgdoerfer slap shot from the point.

Less than a minute later, Oklahoma City gained the lead when an errant outlet pass by Markstrom tipped off the stick of San Antonio defenseman Colby Robak and right to Lander. Lander deked Markstrom before tossing a backhand shot into the back of the Rampage net at 14:39.

Gernat's second goal of the night capped the scoring for the Barons and marked the third Barons goal scored in a span of 1:13.

The Barons return to action Wednesday, Jan. 8 at 7:00 pm, when they take on the Utica Comets at the Cox Convention Center as part of Oklahoma City's Winning Weekdays promotion. If the Barons win Wednesday night, fans in attendance will automatically receive tickets to the Jan. 30 game at Cox Convention Center.
