San Antonio Rampage News Release
OKLAHOMA CITY - After jumping out to a 3-0 lead over the Oklahoma City Barons (13-17-1-5), the San Antonio Rampage (12-20-0-3) allowed five unanswered goals to fall 5-3 at the Cox Convention Center.
Jed Ortmeyer recorded a two-point night in the loss with a goal and an assist, while Wade Megan netted his second goal in as many games and Matt Gilroy added the final marker for the Rampage. Joey Crabb, John Lee, and Garrett Wilson all added assists. Jacob Markstrom made 36 saves as the Rampage were outshot 40-31.
For the second night in a row, and for the sixth time in nine games this season against the Barons, the Rampage drew first blood. Joey Crabb brought the puck down low and dished it into the crease, where Ortmeyer was waiting to push it past Oklahoma City net-minder Richard Bachman.
Coming just 6:33 into the opening frame, Ortmeyer's sixth of the year gave the Rampage a 1-0 lead. Despite a Barons power play, the Rampage would take their lead into the first intermission.
The second period saw a combined four goals, as the Oklahoma City offense finally found its footing late in the period.
Just 2:36 into the middle frame, Garrett Wilson worked his way in, and Megan was there to finish the job, making it 2-0 in favor of the Rampage. The goal was Megan's third of the year, and his second in as many nights.
Six minutes later, Ortmeyer won an offensive zone faceoff, sliding it back to Gilroy. The defenseman's blast from the circle opened the floodgates for the Rampage, giving them a 3-0 lead over the Barons at 8:35 of the second.
After a sleepy start, Oklahoma City started to wake up, as Taylor Fedun's shot bounced off Curtis Hamilton's stick 31 seconds later to snap Markstrom's shutout and put the Barons on the board, 3-1. With 2:57 remaining in the second, Martin Gernat netted his first career goal to bring the Barons within one after the Rampage turned in a solid kill on a late 5-on-3 opportunity for Oklahoma City.
The Gernat goal, assisted by Anton Lander and Tyler Pitlick, would stand as the final one of the period, and the Rampage continued to lead 3-2 heading into the third.
The Barons would score three times in 1:13 to come back and take a 5-3 lead. Goals came from Derek Nesbitt, Anton Lander, and Gernat netted his second of the night for the final Barons goal.
An extra skater on in the final seconds wasn't enough for the Rampage, and they fell 5-3 to the Barons to drop both games in the home-and-home.
The Rampage went 0-for-1 on the power play, while Oklahoma City went 0-for-4.
The Rampage head back to the Alamo City to begin a season-high eight-game homestand, beginning with a 7:00 p.m. tilt against the Abbotsford Heat on Tuesday, Jan. 7. Individual and season tickets can be purchased at the AT&T Center Southeast Box Office, by calling a Rampage representative at 210-444-5554, or online at sarampage.com.
