Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins, member of the American Hockey League, defeated the Portland Pirates 6-3 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center Friday Night, inching to one point behind the Pirates for first-place in the Atlantic Division, still with a game in-hand. The P-Bruins got four power-play goals from Kris Versteeg, T.J. Trevelyan, Matt Lashoff and Pacal Pelletier, in addition to a goal from Bobby Allen and a second from Versteeg.
The forward Versteeg got Providence on the board first with a man-advantage goal 7:29 into the opening period, redirecting a Pelletier shot past Portland starting netminder Nathan Marsters. Lashoff earned the other helper. The Pirates knotted the game at one, as Colby Genoway and Zenon Konopka took advantage of a 2-on-1 rush while short-handed, Genoway leaving a pass for Konopka in front of Philippe Sauve for his seventh goal of the season.
In the second frame, the P-Bruins exploded with four goals, two in the opening two minutes and just 39 seconds apart from Trevelyan and Allen, each their second of the season. The Pirates got to within one at 3-2 when Genoway was the goal-producer this time, beating Sauve five-hole from far out on the low wing, his fifth. But Providence came right back with two more goals in the middle period, Versteeg first with his team-leading 12th and then Lashoff, putting a thirty-foot one-timer home for his third goal in his last two games. Providence went up 5-2 after two.
The P-Bruins and Pirates exchanged goals in the final period, first Aaron Rome 3:01, an unassisted goal flicked in from the blue-line. Then, Pelletier closed out the scoring with a power-play goal with just 1:23 remaining on goalie Dov Grumet-Morris, who relieved Marsters for the final twenty minutes of play. Providence won 6-3.
In net, Sauve earned his 100th professional win with 14 saves on 17 shots while Marsters took the loss, his first in his Portland season-debut. He allowed five goals on 21 Providence attempts and Grumet-Morris stopped 11 of 12 shots. The P-Bruins out-shot the Pirates 33-17.
On the power-play, Providence scored four times in nine attempts while Portland tallied two goals in three chances. Penalty minutes were 25-13 in favor of the Pirates.
The P-Bruins continue their three-game weekend tomorrow, traveling to the Pepsi Arena to face the Albany River Rats. Providence then returns home to the Dunkin' Donuts Center for a contest with the Worcester Sharks Sunday, December 10 at 4:05 p.m. Information on tickets and Providence Bruins season ticket packages for the 2006-07 regular season can be obtained by calling the team ticket office at (401) 273-5000 or by logging onto www.providencebruins.com.
