Pens sign Jon Awe to PTO

WILKES-BARRE, PA - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have signed defenseman Jon Awe to a professional tryout contract, it was announced on Friday. Awe is expected to be in the lineup for the Penguins when they take on the Hamilton Bulldogs tonight at 7:30pm.

Awe, 26, began the season with the Gwinnett Gladiators (ECHL), recording 22 points (8+14) in 20 games. He leads all ECHL defensemen with eight goals and is second among league blueliners with 14 points. He also ranks fourth on Gwinnett in points and tied for third in goals.

The 6-4, 220 pound native of Memphis, TN split last season between Gwinnett, Portland (AHL) and Providence (AHL), recording 35 points (14+21) in 49 games with the Gladiators, and combining for one assist in 18 games in the AHL.

Awe spent four seasons at Northeastern University, where he recorded 32 points (6+26) in 110 games from 2001-2005.

The Penguins return to action tonight, when they take on the Hamilton Bulldogs on the road, and return home to face the Chicago Wolves on Saturday, December 9.
