
P-Bruins Defeat Monarchs 3-2 in 14 Round Shootout

Manchester, NH - The Providence Bruins defeated the Manchester Monarchs 3-2 Wednesday evening in a 14 round shootout at the Verizon Wireless Arena. The P-Bruins got their goals in regulation from Lane MacDermid and Trent Whitfield and in the shootout from Jordan Caron, Whitfield, David Laliberte, Antoine Roussel and MacDermid. The P-Bruins return home to the Dunkin' Donuts Center Friday at 7:05 p.m. for St. Patty's Hat Night against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
After a scoreless opening period, Manchester took the 1-0 lead at the 49 second mark of the second period. Corey Elkins tallied his 17th goal of the season, while Thomas Hickey and David Kolomatis recorded the assists. The P-Bruins tied the game at one at the 13:42 mark. David Lingsent the puck up the ice to Jamie Arniel, who carried the puck into the zone and put it behind the net for MacDermid. He tried to send the puck in front of the net, but it went off a Monarchs player and into the net. For MacDermid it was his sixth goal of the season. The Monarchs retook the lead at the 14:58 mark. Oscar Moller netted his 18th goal of the season, while Viatcheslav Voynov and Brandon Kozun picked up the assists. Providence tied the game at two at the 18:21 mark, while on the power play. Yury Alexandrov had the puck along the left boards and fed it to Maxime Sauve on the left side of the net. He found Whitfield on the right side of the crease, who scored his tenth goal of the season. The game went into the second intermission tied at two.
After a scoreless third period and overtime, the game went into a shootout. Manchester took the lead in the second round with a goal from Bud Holloway . Providence tied up the shootout in the fourth round with a goal from Caron. The Monarchs retook the lead in the fifth round with a goal from Justin Azevedo. Whitfield answer right back with a goal in the fifth round to force extra shootout rounds. In the sixth round Ray Kaunisto put the Monarchs back on top. Once again the P-Bruins were able to answer back as Laliberte tied the shootout at three. In round eleven the Monarchs once again went ahead with a goal from Justin Johnson. The P-Bruins tied it up in the same round with a goal from Roussel. Providence finally took the lead for good, when MacDermid scored in the 14th round to give the P-Bruins a 3-2 victory.
Anton Khudobin stopped 34 of 36 shots in regulation and 10 of 14 shots in the shootout for the P-Bruins, while Jeff Zatkoff made 31 saves in regulation and 9 saves in the shootout for the Monarchs. The P-Bruins were 1-for-5 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
The P-Bruins return home to The Dunk Friday at 7:05 p.m. for St. Patty's Hat Night against the Sound Tigers. Providence heads back on the road Saturday against the Portland Pirates at the Cumberland County Civic Center at 7:00 p.m. The P-Bruins wrap up the weekend at home at The Dunk Sunday for MetLife Plush Snoopy Night against the Sound Tigers at 4:05 p.m. Information on P-Bruins tickets can be obtained by calling the team ticket office at (401) 273-5000 or by logging onto the team website at www.providencebruins.com.
