ALBANY, N.Y. - Chad Wiseman scored four goals in the last nine minutes and thirty-five seconds, lifting the Albany Devils to a 5-4, come-from-behind victory against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers Wednesday at the Times Union Center. Wiseman not only tied the Devils AHL record for goals in a game, but set the franchise standard for goals in a period.
"I've always been a shooter and maybe this year I've gotten away from it," Wiseman, who had six goals entering the night, said. "When you're not scoring, all of a sudden you are trying to pick corners and make extra moves instead of just getting pucks on net. That's all I did different there. Timing was great to get the win."
Albany (25-34-1-3) trailed, 4-1, through two-and-a-half period. Then Wiseman started getting the puck on net. His wrist shot from the right circle found a hole at 10:25 and a great individual effort by Olivier Magnan led to the Wiseman's second goal at 16:28 to make it 4-3.
"It was a great play by Mags," Wiseman said. "There was a bunch of guys in front of the net and I actually didn't see the puck. I just positioned myself and put all my weight on my stick. He told me he shot at my square toe - my stick. He did a great job finding it."
Then with 2:37 remaining, Wiseman sent the puck towards the goal and had it redirected in by a Bridgeport skate.
The night reached its climax when Rob Davison kept the puck in the offensive zone and Stephen Gionta made a pass to Wiseman. He circled in front and picked a corner over the shoulder of Mikko Koskinen.
"When you get a few you start feeling a little confident and you start firing them from everywhere," Wiseman said. "Maybe today is just your day that it's going to go in and I guess today was."
The outing marked the Devils 30th one goal game of the season. They are 16-10-1-3 in those games and have witnessed 11 of their last 13 outings be decided by one goal.
Wiseman joins the company of David Clarkson (Jan. 12, 2007 vs. Philadelphia), Matt Halishuck (Oct. 11, 2008 vs. Worcester) and Tim Sestito (Oct. 17, 2009 at Worcester) as the only Devils to score four goals in one game.
When it was all said and done, Mike McKenna earned the win with 29 saves on 33 shots and Gionta posted a three-point night with three assists. Davison enjoyed a two-assists game.
Bridgeport was led by Jess Joensuu and Rhett Rakhshani, who each had a goal and two assists. Their line mate, Jeremy Colliton posted a pair of assists. In goal, Koskinen finished with 40 saves on 45 shots.
The Devils are back at it on Friday, Mar. 11 for a 7:30 p.m. outing against Northway rival, the Adirondack Phantoms. The game will be the ninth meeting between the two teams and the series for the Time Warner Cable Cup is split 4-4 with four games remaining.
