Peoria Rivermen News Release
The Peoria Rivermen were 1 second away from victory Wednesday night at Allstate Arena, but the Chicago Wolves prevailed in the shootout 3-2. Mark Matheson tied the score with 1.1 remaining in regulation, and Jason Krog netted the winner for the Wolves in the shootout who now trail the Rivermen by just one point in the West Division.
Ben Bishop stopped 40 of 42 Chicago shots in his first start for the team since returning from a three-week stint with the St. Louis Blues, earning him first star honors for the game.
The Rivermen killed off both Wolves power plays in the opening frame and Bishop stopped all 13 Chicago shots in a scoreless first period.
Jim McKenzie, making his Rivermen debut, put a shot through the legs of Edward Pasquale to open the scoring in the second. The goal came at the 3:23 mark and was assisted by Blair Riley.
The Rivermen struck again at the 6:48 mark, but this time on the man advantage. Mark Cundari's eighth power-play goal and 10th of the season came on a slapshot from the blue line from Nick Drazenovic and Dave Spina.
Jason Krog cut the lead in half on a 5-on-3 for Chicago at the 13:15 mark. His slap shot from the top of the right circle found its way by Bishop for his 16th on the year from Ben Maxwell and Josh Godfrey.
Just 2:50 into the third, Dave Spina was pulled down on a breakway and awarded a penalty shot. He was stopped by Pasquale to keep the Rivermen ahead by just a single goal. It was the first penalty shot of the season for a Rivermen skater.
With the net empty, Matheson tied the game with just 1.1 seconds remaining on a slap shot through traffic from the top of the left circle. Matheson's sixth of the year came from Jaime Sifers and Krog and sent the game to overtime for the third straight game between these two squads.
After a scoreless overtime, the two teams went to a shootout for the second time in four days.
Akim Aliu, who played 43 games with the Wolves earlier this season, was the only Rivermen shooter to beat Pasquale in the shootout. Ryan Garbutt and Jason Krog scored back-to-back goals in the third and fourth rounds to pick up the extra point for Chicago.
The Rivermen face Chicago again Friday night to close out the two-game series at Allstate Arena. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. and can be heard locally on 96.5 ESPN in Peoria or online at www.rivermen.net.
