Portland Pirates News Release

Portland, ME - The Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League announced today that Martin Gendron will be inducted as the 14th member of the Portland Pirates Hall of Fame, presented by Unum. Gendron, who secured the honor through an on-line and in arena fan vote, will be inducted on Saturday, March 26th when the Pirates face-off against the Charlotte Checkers at 7 p.m. at the Cumberland County Civic Center. "It's obviously a great honor," Gendron said. "The Pirates are the team I started my pro hockey career with and to be recognized as a Hall of Fame member with the first team I played for is warming to my heart. We always said in the room 'once a Pirate always a Pirate'. I started as a pirate and I get to finish as a Hall of Fame member of the Pirates. It's a good feeling. To get voted into the Pirates Hall of Fame is a blessing from my father, who passed away a couple of years ago."

Gendron made a strong impression on Portland hockey in a short period in which he donned a Pirates jersey. Playing only two seasons in Portland (1994-95 and 1995-96), Gendron put up impressive numbers that have stood the test of time in the Pirates record book even against players that enjoyed a longer tenure. In only 120 games with the Pirates, he racked up 74 goals (seventh all-time in Pirates history), 61 assists and 135 points. Gendron still holds (or shares) three separate offensive records for the Pirates which include: all-time hat tricks (five), power-play goals in a season (15, 1995-96) and goals in a single game (four, 3/29/96 vs. St. John). Drafted 71st overall by the Washington Capitals in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft, Gendron suited up in 30 NHL games with the Capitals and Chicago Blackhawks totaling six points (4-2-6).

"Martin was definitely an offensive threat during his two seasons as a member of the Pirates and we are excited to welcome him as the newest member of our Hall of Fame, presented by Unum" said Pirates Managing Owner/CEO Brian Petrovek. "He was instrumental in an extended playoff run in 1995-96 that brought the Pirates to within one victory of a second Calder Cup Championship in three seasons."

Gendron, who is Real Estate Broker for Re/Max, currently lives in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Québec with his wife, Michele, daughter Alyssa and son Alexis.
