Overtime Sends Monarchs Packing

HARTFORD, CT - Defenseman Ivan Baranka's fourth goal of the season lifted the Hartford Wolf Pack over the Manchester Monarchs 2-1 in overtime in front of 4,051 fans at the Hartford Civic Center on Saturday night.
Manchester (11-11-3-1) is in fifth place in the Atlantic Division with 26 points. Hartford (19-8-0-2) is ranked second in the Atlantic Division with 40 points.
A scoreless third period led to Baranka's game-winning goal at 3:11 of the overtime session. Left wing Nigel Dawes held the puck behind the Monarchs net until he found Baranka streaking to the crease for the one-timer that beat Monarchs goaltender Daniel Taylor five-hole. Right wing Greg Moore also assisted on the winning goal.
A tightly played match between the Monarchs and Wolf Pack ended the first period in a 0-0 tie and hit the locker room for the second intermission in a 1-1 tie. Hartford defenseman Thomas Pock picked up his third goal of the season by stuffing in the rebound from right wing Pierre Parenteau's initial shot. Taylor stopped Parenteau's slap shot but Pock's rebound shot came from the right doorstep and into the back of the net. Dawes assisted on the power play goal at 3:27 of the middle frame.
Monarchs center David Meckler lit the lamp for his ninth goal of the season at 15:48 of the second period. The No. 1 power play in the AHL was held scoreless on the two-minute man advantage but evened the game at 1-1 just four seconds after the power play expired. Right wing Vladimir Dravecky sent the puck to defenseman Jeff Likens at the left point. Likens' shot from the point tipped off the stick of Meckler and past the screened netminder Al Montoya.
Taylor (2-1-0) stopped 33 shots for his first overtime loss of the season. Montoya (8-5-2) earned the win with 26 saves.
Manchester went 0-for-4 on the power play. Hartford was 1-for-2 with the man advantage.
The Monarchs host the Worcester Sharks at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Sunday, December 16 in a 4:05 p.m. contest. The first 2,500 fans will receive a purple Monarchs Santa hat.
