LOWELL, Mass. - Six different skaters scored for the Providence Bruins as the Lowell Devils were defeated, 6-1, on Saturday night at Tsongas Arena.
The league's leader in shots against per game (23.8), the Bruins limited the Devils to just 18 through sixty minutes. Providence especially dominated the first period of play, outshooting Lowell 14-2 and taking a 2-0 lead.
They needed only 4:29 to get the first goal of the contest as Sean Curry intercepted an outlet pass at the blueline and quickly threw a seemingly innocent wrister toward the net. Though the shot was originally destined to go wide, the puck tipped off of a body and past an unsuspecting Frank Doyle. Providence squeezed another one in, literally, a minute before the intermission as Matt Lashoff's shot from the far circle hit Doyle's stick, but had enough muscle to bounce across the goal line.
With Jordan Parise taking Doyle's spot in net for the second frame, the Devils looked to rebound, but instead found themselves in a deeper hole. After the Lowell defense lost track of the puck down by the goal line, T.J. Trevelyan swept a pass to Jeff Hoggan who was alone on the far post for the tap-in at 6:23. Providence's special teams got into the act as well, as the Devils were unable to stop a feed through the slot from Martins Karsums and Krecji fired from the right dot for a power play goal at 8:49 that made the score 4-0.
The Devils responded almost three minutes later on the man-advantage for their first goal of the game. Grant Marshall teed up a slapshot from the top of the zone that clipped off a defenseman's skate and slipped past goaltender Andy Franck.
That would be the only blemish on Franck's stat sheet as Trevelyan put the Bruins back up by four with 5:25 remaining until the second intermission. Pascal Pelletier then completed the scoring with a 5-on-3 power play tally coming 1:18 into the third.
Doyle stopped 12-of-14 shots in one period of work, while Parise made 15-of-19 saves in relief.
