Falcons Earn A Point In Portland

The Springfield Falcons lost to the Portland Pirates 4-3 in overtime on Saturday night at the Cumberland County Civic Center. The Falcons surrendered a two-goal lead in the third period as the Pirates scored three unanswered markers to earn the victory in the extra session. The two teams will square off once again on Sunday afternoon.

The Falcons held a 3-1 lead entering the third period, but Portland started their comeback at 9:15 of the final frame when Brian Salcido scored on the power play cutting the Pirates deficit to 3-2.

With seven minutes remaining in regulation, Liam Reddox was awarded a penalty shot, but Portland goaltender Mike McKenna made the stop keeping Portland within a single goal. McKenna's key stop paid dividends as the Pirates tied the score at 17:33 of the final frame when Andrew Ebbett redirected a Joe Callahan shot past Springfield goaltender Jeff Deslauriers sending the contest to overtime.

In the extra session, the game appeared to be headed for the shootout, but Petteri Wirtanen's wrist shot found the back of the net with just 27-seconds remaining giving Portland a 4-3 win.

The Falcons started the night strong as Reddox gave the Birds a 1-0 lead at 5:53 of the opening period with his eighth goal of the season. The Falcons took a 2-0 lead at 9:45 of the first period when Marc Pouliot converted on the power play giving Springfield a two-goal cushion through 20 minutes.

In the second period, Portland cut their deficit to 2-1 when Matt Keith converted on the power play at 2:14 of the middle frame. Springfield regained their two-goal advantage with a power play goal of their own when Mathieu Roy's slap shot beat McKenna at 13:27 of the second period giving the Falcons a 3-1 lead through 40 minutes of play.
