PEORIA, IL - The Peoria Rivermen scored in the opening minute of the third period and again in overtime to beat the Manitoba Moose 2-1 on Friday night in front of 3,882 fans at Carver Arena. Steve Wagner pushed his own rebound behind Cory Schneider 36 seconds into overtime to end a hard-fought battle with the defending Western Conference champion.
The Rivermen controlled play for most of the first two period and built a 17-11 edge in the shot totals but both goalies stood their ground to keep the game scoreless. Both teams were 0-for-2 on the power play through the first two periods and finished with the same mark.
Nicholas Drazenovic broke the scoreless tie 33 seconds into the third frame. His team-leading eighth goal of the season came after Adam Cracknell grabbed the puck in the corner and fed Drazenovic in the slot. He snapped a shot over the blocker of Schneider.
The Moose tied the game at 10:39 on a Marty Murray tally from Matt Pettinger. The initial shot was taken by Pettinger was deflected by the body of Murray, over the shoulder of Hannu Toivonen, off the crossbar and in.
Peoria outshot the Moose 14-11 in the third period and 33-22 in the game. They collected the only two shots of overtime as Wagner converted on a goal-mouth scramble. Jonas Junland pushed a shot from the blue line that Cam Paddock kept alive by bouncing the puck to Wagner. His shot snuck behind Schneider and before he could recover Wagner finished the job.
The Rivermen improved to 3-1 in overtime and twice have won in the opening minute of sudden death. Overall, six of the Rivermen's 10 wins have come in either overtime or a shootout.
The three-game home stand concludes on Saturday when the Grand Rapids Griffins visit Carver Arena at 7 p.m. Fans 21 years or older can enter to win a 22-inch flat screen TV courtesy of Par-A-dice Hotel Casino. Tickets are available at the Rivermen office by calling 309-676-1040 or online at www.rivermen.net/tickets.
