Abbotsford Heat News Release
CHICAGO ILL - A holiday crowd of 4327 filed into the Allstate Arena for a Black Friday Battle between the hometown Chicago Wolves and the visiting Abbotsford Heat. The Heat sent the crowd home disappointed however, as they prevailed by the score of 3-1.
Johnny Pohl had the crowd in the game early, scoring just 1:05 into the game on a sweet behind the net feed from former Vancouver Canuck forward and Wolves Captain Jason Krog. Pohl took the feed and rifled a shot over the shoulder of Heat goalie Leland Irving. Former Vancouver Giants Spencer Machacek also assisted on the play and the Wolves were out to an early 1-0 lead.
The lead for the wolves would be short-lived, as Heat d-man Keith Seabrook would level the score at 6:20. Carsen Germyn was able to spot the rookie defender with a cross ice pass, right on the tape. Seabrook was able to walk in and blast a shot right through a partially screened Drew MacIntyre. MacIntyre couldn't handle the smoke on the shot from Seabrook and it was 1-1.
In a scoreless second period which both teams trade chances on the power play, the best save of the night, if not the season, was made by Leland Irving. With Josh Gratton taking a brilliant feed from the corner, Irving was able to dart out his left pad right on the goal line to keep the score level at 1-1 through two periods.
In a wide open third, both teams were looking to take the lead, and the Heat were able to seize control of the game. After another enormous save, this time Irving stuffed Brett Sterling on the doorstep, Keith Seabrook fed a breakout pass to the line of Colin Stuart, Carsen Germyn and Jason Jaffray. Stuart carried the puck across the Wolves blue line and fed a streaking Germyn down the right side boards. Germyn then put a pinpoint pass on the tape of Jaffray's stick. Jaffray tipped the puck past MacIntyre to give the Heat their first lead of the night.
Later in the period, after the HEAT were unable to score on a 2 minute, 2 man advantage, the Wolves applied some serious pressure to Abbotsford. But Irving was able to shut the door and also get a fortunate hop as Brett Sterling pounded a shot off the Heat keeper that hit the top of Irving's shoulder, and then rang off the right post behind the âtender. Moments later, the Heat would seal the deal as Kris Chucko would notch his 8th of the season, dropping a shot in from centre ice into the empty Chicago goal.
Irving picks up his second straight road win and his 10th win of the season as the Heat pick up their 7th win on the road so far in this young campaign. Abbotsford will now play a game versus the Rockford IceHogs on Saturday night before heading back to Canada to play the Toronto Marlies on Tuesday from Hog Town.
