Syracuse Crunch Top Houston Aeros 4-3 in Shootout

SYRACUSE, NY - The Houston Aeros (11-10-1-1) dropped the second game of a three game road trip Friday to the Syracuse Crunch (7-10-2-2) 4-3 in a shootout in front of 4,821 at Onondaga County War Memorial at Oncenter. LW Bates Battaglia scored the game-winning-goal in the shootout, D David Liffiton added a goal and an assist and G Kevin Lalande (4-5-1) made 21 saves and stopped all four shots in the shootout for the victory. RW Carson McMillan, RW J-M Daoust and LW Petr Kalus each scored for the Aeros and G Anton Khudobin (9-4-1) stopped 23 shots and allowed two goals on five shots in the shootout.
The teams traded goals in each of the three periods, beginning in the first period as McMillan put the Aeros on the board at the 9:07 mark with his first career AHL goal. C Tom Sestito tied the game just over three minutes later with a power-play goal at 12:32. It was just the third power-play goal allowed on the road by Houston, the AHL's top penalty kill team.
Syracuse took the lead 13:00 into the second period as LW Jordan Lavellee-Smotherman scored his second goal of the season. Houston responded late with Daoust's fifth goal of the season. C Chad Rau found Daoust alone in the Crunch zone, Daoust beat Lalande with the backhand shot to tie the score 2-2 at 16:34.
The Aeros entered the game 10-1-1-0 when tied or leading after the second period and took control midway through the third period as Kalus scored a power-play goal at 7:01 to give the Aeros a 3-2 lead. Houston then had an opportunity moments later to extend their lead after Syracuse took back-to-back penalties, giving the Aeros 1:18 of 5-on-3. Houston was unable to capitalize as the Crunch killed off both penalties and Liffiton tied the game with his first of the season at 13:24, sending the game to overtime.
Houston again had a chance to win the game in overtime with a power-play after a goaltender interference penalty, but the Crunch penalty kill stood strong to force a shootout. After both RW Pascal Pelletier and RW Jon DiSalvatore missed on the first shot, Battaglia scored to give Syracuse the lead. Daoust, McMillan and Rau also missed for Houston and C Jared Aulin scored on the fifth shot to seal the win for Syracuse.
The Crunch outshot Houston 27-24 on the night. The Aeros finished 1-for-6 on the powerplay while Syracuse finished 1-for-4. It was the first shootout loss on the season for Houston, who drops to 2-1 in shootouts while Syracuse improves to 2-2 in shootouts on the year.
