Evansville Otters News Release

(AVON, OHIO) - The Evansville Otters induced the Lake Erie Crushers in to five double players, preserving a 3-2 win at All Pro Freight Stadium on Thursday night.

Evansville turned three double plays over the last three innings to secure their first ever series win at Lake Erie (teams first met in 2009). The five double plays for the Otters defense falls two short of the franchise record of seven turned on July 4, 2006.

Evansville starter Matt Zielinski and Lake Erie pitcher Matt Smith kept both teams scoreless through the first two innings. Outfielder C.J. Henry hit a one out double in the third inning and he scored a few batters later on Andrew Clark's RBI single.

Ahead 1-0, Zielinski got a strike 'em out, throw 'em out double play to get around trouble in the bottom of the inning. He also allowed a leadoff single in the fourth but escaped the jam with a double play.

Evansville added to their lead in the fifth inning. After a groundout, Henry worked a four-pitch walk and scored on a two-run home run from outfielder Nick Schwaner. It was Schwaner's second home run of the series and team-high fifth home run this year.

Down 3-0, Lake Erie catcher Emmanual Quiles recorded a single and moved around to third on a throwing error from catcher John Nester. He scored on a sacrifice fly to right field, cutting the lead to two. Lake Erie kept chipping away as the Crushers scored again on a run-producing single from infielder Andrew Davis in the sixth.

Evansville's defense recorded a strikeout-throwout double play in the seventh, a conventional 4-6-3 double play in the eighth and another strikeout-caught stealing double play in the ninth for the win.

The Otters are now a Frontier League best 16-7 this season as Lake Erie falls to 10-14. Zielinski (3-0) earns the win, allowing two runs over 6.0 innings. Smith (3-1) takes the loss, yielding three runs in 8.0 innings.

Evansville will continue their six game roadtrip with a battle for first place at the Washington Wild Things. The Wild Things sit in second place just behind Evansville. The Otters will have left-hander Ryan Zamorsky (3-0, 0.00 ERA) against lefty Shawn Smith (2-1, 2.58). First pitch is 7:05 pm EDT.
