June 13, 2013 - Frontier League (FL)
Joliet Slammers News Release
Joliet, IL - The Joliet Slammers (11-13) split the two games in a Thursday double header against the River City Rascals (9-14) winning 4-0 in game one and losing 4-0 in game two at Silver Cross Field.
The Slammers however won the first game of the series on Tuesday, 5-4 and thus took the series from River City two games to one.
Shawn Kale (1-0) was magnificent in the first game, picking up the victory in his first start of the year. Kale pitched a complete game, seven-inning shutout, only allowing five hits and striking out eight batters.
Kale started in the place of former Joliet starter Jacob Sanchez who was signed by the Chicago White Sox earlier this week.
In the first game Joliet scored first with four runs coming home in the second inning. Kyle Maunus started the inning with a leadoff walk and was moved to third on a double by Jerod Yakubik.
David Christensen started the scoring for Joliet, picking up a RBI on a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Maunus from third and giving the Slammers a 1-0 lead. Seth Schwindenhammer followed the run by walking to first and Nick Akins in his first plate appearance as a Slammer scored Jared Yakubik on a RBI double down the third base line.
Both Schwindenhammer and Atkins would score in the frame, Schwindenhammer on a RBI single from Ben Hewett and Akins on the sacrifice fly to left field by Marquis Riley.
Joliet held onto the 4-0 lead to win the first game of the double header.
Game number two was dominated by pitching, highlighted by Slammers' starter Chuck Lofgren who pitched seven innings of shutout baseball and striking out three.
Unfortunately for the Slammers, their offense was held in check the whole game, being shutout 4-0 in the final game of the series.
The game was scoreless entering extra innings in the eighth, but with two outs, River City scored four runs, topped off by a three-run home run from Phil Wunderlich to put the game out of reach for Joliet.
Joliet hits the road Friday morning for a three-game series with Traverse City, with first pitch on Friday coming at 6:05 p.m. central time. Corey Kimes (2-2) gets the call for Joliet and Scott Dunn (4-0) will start for the Beach Bums. All the action can be heard on 1340 WJOL and online at www.wjol.com.
