Lake Erie Crushers News Release

AVON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Crushers hit into three double plays, and were on the wrong end of a pair of strike 'em out, throw 'em out double plays at All Pro Freight Stadium on Thursday night, as they dropped the series finale against the Evansville Otters, 3-2.

The Crushers (10-14) have now lost three out of their last four games, while the win for the Otters (16-7) was their seventh in their last nine games.

Evansville scored first in the top of the third inning. C.J. Henry started a string of three straight hits with a one out double, and moved to third on Nick Schwaner's base hit, before scoring on Andrew Clark's single.

The Otters added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 3-0 advantage, as Schwaner struck again, this time with a two-run homer, his second of the series, and his fifth of the season.

Lake Erie jumped on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning. Emmanuel Quiles singled with one out, stole second base and made his way to third on an errant throw, before coming home on Ricardo Lizcano's sacrifice fly.

The Crushers added another run in the last of the sixth inning. Andrew Davis brought his hitting streak to 14 games, on a run scoring single to plate Max Casper, bringing the Crushers within a run.

Double plays ruined the Crushers in the final three innings. Russ Moldenhauer started the seventh with a single, but was erased moments later after Quiles bounced into a double play, and the Crushers had runners at the corners with one out in the eighth when Davis grounded into an inning ending 6-4-3 twin killing.

Anderson Hidalgo started the ninth inning with a single, and was replaced on the bases by Gauntlett Eldemire. Moldenhauer struck out a few moments later, and Eldemire was caught stealing second on the back end of the play to spoil the momentum.

Matt Zielinski (3-0) allowed just a pair of runs on six hits over six innings of action and came away with the win while Eric Massingham (5) tossed a scoreless ninth to get the save. Matt Smith (2-1) went eight innings for the Crushers, allowing a trio of runs on eight hits and suffered the loss.

Daniel Bowman and Juan Sanchez paced the Crushers with two hits apiece. Bowman had a strong series, going 6-for-12 against the Otters, while Kevin Berard extended his on base streak to 10 games, and Davis brought his hitting streak to 14 games, Lake Erie's longest of the season.

The Crushers will begin a three game series against the Rockford Aviators at Aviator Stadium on Friday night. The Crushers will start left hander Matt Rein (2-2, 2.89) and the Aviators will start right hander Trevor Harden (1-3, 4.41). First pitch is scheduled for 8:05 PM.
