Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
FLORENCE, KY - Zach Kometani drove in five runs and Jacob Clem pitched effectively into the eighth as the Traverse City Beach Bums won their second in a row, downing the Florence Freedom 8-5 on Thursday night.
Traverse City jumped out early as after a single by Ryan Still and a double from Jose Vargas, Chase Burch lined a single through the middle scoring both runners for a 2-0 Beach Bums lead. Florence countered in the bottom of the inning with a homerun from David Harris to make it 2-1.
In the third, Burch singled with one out to bring up Zach Kometani. The Beach Bums DH launched a Jason Wilson offering over the leftfield wall for a 2-run homer and a 4-1 Traverse City advantage. In the fifth, Sean Gusrang clocked his second homer of the season, a solo shot to right to extend the lead to 5-1.
The Beach Bums grabbed a few more in the sixth as Jose Vargas reached on a two out error followed by a walk to Chase Burch. Kometani stepped to the dish and sliced a ball deep to rightfield that tailed away from Ryan Skellie for a two-run triple and a 7-1 Traverse City lead.
Florence challenged late as they scored a run in the bottom of the seventh and three in the eighth. Sandwiched in between the Freedom runs was a Beach Bums tally in the top of the eighth when Kometani drove in his fifth run of the contest with a double to score Vargas who doubled two batters earlier.
The win went to Jacob Clem (3-3) who pitched 7+ innings allowing six hits and three earned runs. Matt Miller tossed a scoreless ninth for his third save. Jason Wilson (1-3) took the loss for Florence.
Offensively, Kometani's five RBI is a TC season-high while Matt Howard collected a Beach Bums season-best four hits. Both Vargas and Burch had two hits and Taylor Wrenn had a fourth inning single to extend his hitting streak to 17 games.
The Beach Bums now return home on Friday for a FANtastic Fireworks Friday against Joliet at 7:05 pm. For information or tickets to upcoming Beach Bums games, call 943-0100, visit the Wuerfel Park ticket office, or log on to www.tcbeachbums.com.
