Marion, IL - Blake Nation earned his third victory of the season as he pitched seven shutout innings in a 4-1 victory over the Rockford Aviators. He walked three batters and struck out six in his longest outing of the season.
For the first time in the series, the Miners led 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning. First baseman Carlos Mendez hit a RBI groundout off Aviators starter Drew Rucinski to score center fielder Tyler Hall. Southern Illinois added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning off Rucinski as short stop Tyler Stubblefield hit a RBI double to score Hall and Mendez hit a RBI single to score Stubblefield. The Miners led 3-0 heading into the top of the fourth inning.
In the bottom of the seventh inning off Aviators reliever Hayden Shirley, Stubblefield hit his second RBI double of the game to give the Miners a 4-0 lead. Rockford scored a run with two outs in the top of the ninth inning off Miners reliever Reese McGraw but that would be all as the Miners won 4-1 over Rockford to take the series.
The Miners now head to Windy City to take on the Windy City ThunderBolts. First pitch will get underway at 7:05 pm at Standard Bank Stadium. Fans can tune in to the Miners Radio Network beginning at 6:45 pm for the Heartland Regional Medical Center Pregame Show.
