Evansville Otters News Release

Florence, KY - The Otters dropped their sixth straight decision Wednesday, losing to the Florence Freedom 12-5 at Champion Window Field.

Game time was pushed back an hour due to rain, but the down time didn't dampen the Otters. They took a 3-0 lead on Dustin Koca's seventh home run of the season in the first inning. Florence would pick up a run of their own in the bottom half on a Johnny Welch sacrifice fly.

The Otters lead evaporated for good in the second inning when Justin Pickett launched a two-run homer to left-centerfield, tying the game at 3-3. Brad Hough followed with an infield single and scored on Jay Johnson's double for a 4-3 lead. Otters' starter Rashad Ford would leave after the second inning after taking a line drive off of the leg. Reliever Nick Utley came on and pitched the next three innings.

Florence started to pull away in the fifth, when Ryan Basham led off with a solo home run. One batter later, Billy Mottram hit his 17th homer of the year. Erold Andrus reached second base when Greg Alexander dropped a ball in left field, and scored on Tim Grogan's single for a 7-3 lead after five innings.

The Otters showed life in the sixth, scoring twice on RBI singles from Kevin Mackey and Andre Liscinsky. Evansville could not hold the momentum though, as the Freedom struck for four runs in the bottom of the inning. Six of the first seven batter recorded hits off of reliever Brandon Dill, with RBI knocks coming from Basham, Andrus, and Grogan.

In all, Florence banged out 21 hits, a season high for the Freedom and a season high allowed by the Otters. Florence hit three home runs, two doubles, and sixteen singles.

Freedom starter Everett Saul advanced to 8-3, allowing five earned runs in six innings. Ford (3-5) absorbed the loss, surrendering four runs in his two innings.

The Otters return home Thursday to begin a three game set with the Gateway Grizzlies. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm CDT.
