O'FALLON, MO - River City put up a six spot in the third inning and held on for a 8-7 victory Wednesday night over Lake Erie at T.R. Hughes Ballpark. The Rascals snapped a three game losing streak and finished 2-4 on the six game home stand.
The Rascals (32-21) roughed up Jorge Charry (0-3) for six runs in the third, sending 11 hitters to the plate. Danny Sawyer started the frame with a double and scored from third on a Kylee Hash passed ball after Joe Chavarria reached on a bunt single. JoJo Batten doubled two batters later to give River City a 4-1 lead. Scott Robinson singled off Eddie Tisdale's glove to plate Batten and Chris Colton followed later in the inning with a two run single for a 7-1 cushion.
Lake Erie gradually chipped away at the lead with two in the fifth, three in the eighth and one in the ninth. Jodem Rivera led off the eighth with a two base hit to right field off reliever, Josh Rose. Drew Saylor singled home Rivera and moved to second after Gordon Gronkowski was hit by a pitch. Tim Binkoski smashed a sharp single to left that Chad Maddox misplaced, allowing Saylor and Gronkowksi to score to cut the lead to 8-6.
Jason Lowey came on in ninth and surrendered a leadoff double to Wayne Bond. After Hash struck out looking, Rivera pushed a bunt past Lowey to give the Crushers runners at the corners with one out. Saylor grounded out to shortstop, plating Bond from third with Rivera moving up to second base. With the tying run at second and two outs, Andrew Davis grounded out to Chavarria at short for the 8-7 final.
Josh Lowey (4-1) went the first seven frames for River City, allowing three runs (one earned) to capture the victory. Lowey surrendered only four hits with five strikeouts and three walks whiel twin brother, Jason, picked up his Frontier League leading 13th save.
The Rascals started the scoring in the second on Scott Robinson's tenth home run of the season to lead 1-0. River City got what proved to be the game winner in the fourth, manufacturing a run against Charry. Scott Houin walked, swiped second and went to third on a wild pitch. With one out, Maddox lifted a sacrifice fly to center to give River City an 8-1 advantage.
Charry exited after five innings, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts.
Batten, Robinson and Colton all had two hits in the win with Robinson and Colton each knocking in two.
River City finished the regular season 4-2 against Lake Erie and won the finale despite committing three errors. The Rascals take a short three game road trip up to Crestwood, Illinois to face Windy City. The ThunderBolts are 0-6 in the second half after getting swept at Traverse City and Kalamazoo. Jake Laber (7-2) and Dustin Pease (6-3) is the starting pitching matchup. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. from Standard Bank Stadium.
