Beach Bums Fall to Wild Things

WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Traverse City Beach Bums were defeated by the Washington Wild Things 5-1 in the opener of a roadtrip at CONSOL Energy Park on Thursday night.

All-Star Jacob Dempsey opened the scoring by connecting on his 15th homer of the season leading off the second inning. Dempsey took the first pitch from Beach Bums starter Jason Kiley over the wall in left to put Washington up 1-0.

Washington added to the lead with two runs in the third to stretch the edge to 3-0. Chris SIdick and Michael Parker singled to start the inning and Phil Laurent drew a walk. Ernie Banks drove in a run with a fielder's choice while Jacob Dempsey capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly. Another run came across in the fourth to push the lead to 4-0 as Matt Sutton scored on a wild pitch.

Jason Kiley did not make it out of the fifth inning, failing to record an out as Washington bumped the lead to 6-0 with two runs. Phil Laurent led off by homering off the videoboard in right on a 1-1 offering. Ernie Banks followed with a single and scored from first when Jacob Dempsey doubled to left. Kiley threw four innings and allowed six runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out two.

The Beach Bums were able to breakup the shutout in the top of the seventh. Mike Vistor led off by doubling off the wall in left. He moved to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch. The run was the only run of the game allowed by Washington starter Craig Snipp, who was activated from injured reserve and threw seven innings to pick up his second win. He struck out four and allowed four hits. Andrew Stafford paced the Beach Bums with two hits on the offensive end.

The Beach Bums will continue the series with Washington tomorrow night. RHP Kevin Reese (5-3, 4.55) starts for the Beach Bums against Washington's LHP Jason Neitz (5-3, 5.94). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm and the contest can be heard on The Fox FM.
