Otters Lose First Half Finale 3-2 in 10 Innings

(EVANSVILLE, INDIANA) - The Evansville Otters (30-19) erased two deficits on Sunday night but Lake Erie plated the would-be-game winning run in the 10th inning for a 3-2 win at Bosse Field.

The Otters enter the Frontier League All-Star break 11 games over .500.

Rockport, Indiana native Blake Monar started for the Otters but the Crushers greeted the Evansville starter with a first inning run. Catcher Emmanuel Quiles reached on a single, advanced to third and scored later in the frame on a passed ball.

Evansville tied the game in the fourth against Lake Erie starter Trevor L ongfellow. All-Star Shayne Houck hit a solo home run to left field that evened up the score. It was Houck's 13 th home run of the season and his sixth home run in the last seven games.

Lake Erie capitalized on an Otters throwing error in the seventh for the 2-1 edge only to witness Evansville tie the game in the eighth. With men at first and second, shortstop Phillip Wilson hit a ground ball up the middle that skipped through to make the game 2-2.

The game stayed a tie until the 10th when Lake Erie infielder Anderson Hidalgo hit a go-ahead RBI double to center field for the go-ahead run.

Evansville nearly rallied back from a third deficit in the bottom of the 10th. Chris Sweeney reached on a leadoff single and advanced to third with one out. However, reliever Ryan Connolly, the eighth pitcher of the game for Lake Erie, got the final two hitters out to maintain the 3-2 win.

Outfielder J.R. Higley extended his team-best hitting streak to 12 games with a 1-for-3 performance. Outfielder Chris Sweeney ended the night 2-for-4, giving him a five game hitting streak.

The Otters are off the next four games for the Frontier League All-Star game.

They will return at home on Friday, July 18 to begin a three-game series against the Southern Illinois Miners at Bosse Field. It is Frito Lay Night at the ballpark with first pitch set for 6:35 pm CDT. Fans can call 812-435-8686 for tickets. The game will be broadcast live on WUEV 91.5 FM beginning at 6:15 pm.
