
Frontier League Announces Home Run Derby Participants

(Sauget, Ill.)- The Frontier League is proud to announce the participants that will be taking part in the league's Home Run Derby, sponsored by the Casino Queen, which will be held on this Tuesday, July 15, 2014 at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Illinois.
Five players each from the East and West divisions have been named by Commissioner Bill Lee and Deputy Commissioner Steve Tahsler. These players include Windy City OF Kyle Robinson, River City C Josh Ludy, Normal OF Mike Schwartz, Gateway SS Michael Wing and Joliet 1B Russell Moldenhauer for the West. The East will send Greys 1B Joe Rapp, Lake Erie IF Vincent Mejia, Washington OF Stewart Ijames, Florence C Joe Staley and Evansville 3B Shayne Houck.
Ludy and Ijames are currently tied for the league lead in homers with 15 a piece. Moldenhauer will be in search of a second derby title as he won the 2012 edition.
As in past seasons, each player will get 10 outs in the first round of the derby. The top 4 home run hitters will advance to the second round. In the second round each player will get a second 10 outs. From there, the top two players in terms of first and second round combine homers will advance to the finals. In the finals the home run totals will reset and each player will get five more outs.
The derby winner will receive a $777 prize and a bat while the runner up will take home $250.
For $15 fans can still get tickets to the event by contacting the Gateway Grizzlies. Gates will open at 5:40 and the event will start at 7:05. The tickets will include admission to both the derby and the second annual "Battle of the Sexes" game, pitting the Frontier League All-Stars against the Chicago Bandits of National Professional Fastpitch.
The Frontier League is entering its 22nd season in 2014 and features 14 teams stretching from Pennsylvania to Missouri and from Kentucky to northern Michigan. The Frontier League annually advances the most players to MLB organizations of any of the independent leagues, and 26 former Frontier League players have played in the Major Leagues.
