Washington Wild Things News Release
Washington, PA-After a short rain delay, strong pitching performances by two of the best throwers for the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, paved the way for a three-game series sweep and a 5-1 victory against the Florence Freedom Sunday at CONSOL Energy Park.
Scott Dunn tossed three innings allowing only one run on four hits with All-Star thrower Shawn Blackwell continuing the great performance by throwing five innings of scoreless ball. Reliever Pat Butler earned his first save of the season finishing the game with two strikeouts.
Florence struck first in the top of the second as Freedom catcher Joe Staley lined a shot over the right field wall to give the Freedom their lone run of the night.
Washington was quick to answer in the bottom of the inning when second baseman Sam Montgomery laced an RBI single up the middle to even the score. Montgomery had a solid day at the dish, giving Washington another run in the third off of a RBI fielder's choice.
Wild Things right fielder Stewart Ijames also chipped in with a RBI single in the fifth inning making the score 3-1. Shortstop Garrett Rau continued the offensive attack when he knocked in another run for Washington from a fielder's choice, 4-1.
Washington was able to tally another run in the eighth when centerfielder Danny Poma gave the home team a comfortable lead with an RBI single to make the final score 5-1.
Washington returns to CONSOL Energy Park Friday June 18th after the All-Star break to take on the River City Rascals in a three game series. For tickets call (724) 250-9555, stop by the box office, or visit online at www.washingtonwildthings.com.
