Last time out...
The Florence Freedom (21-27) got off to a fast start Saturday night against the Wild Things (31-19) but Washington came storming back with a four-run fifth inning to beat the Freedom by a score of 5-4. Cole Miles smacked a two-RBI single in the third inning and Adam Taylor contributed a two-RBI single of his own in the fourth to put Florence up 4-0. But Stewart Ijames responded with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 4-1 and Washington completed their comeback in the fifth. Blaise Fernandez reached on an infield single. One out later Sam Montgomery doubled him in to make it a 4-2 game. With two away, Garrett Rau doubled home Montgomery and C.J. Beatty launched a two-run home run to give Washington the 5-4 lead. The Freedom didn't record another hit until the ninth and a double play ended that threat as they dropped their third consecutive game.
For Starters...
All-Star Chuck Weaver makes his ninth start of the season tonight and his first against Washington. In his most recent outing Weaver took the loss against the Frontier Greys on July 9. He went six innings, scattering five hits, giving up four runs, three of them earned in the defeat. It was his first loss since May as Weaver went 3-0 in June and also won his first start of July. Weaver was signed by the Freedom in June 2013 after he finished up his collegiate career at IPFW. He had a solid rookie season, posting a 4-2 record with a 3.70 ERA in 14 appearances, 12 starts. The Ft. Wayne, Ind. native started 13 games as a senior for the Mastadons, posting a 2-5 with a 3.57 ERA. Weaver threw two complete games as a senior and pitched 70.2 innings. He played two years for IPFW after transferring from Vincennes University where he was named to the NJCAA All-Academic team.
One-run affairs...
Saturday's one-run loss drops Florence's record to 7-12 in one-run games. They have dropped five consecutive one-run decisions.
Trying to avoid the sweep...
Despite their poor record on the road, Florence has not been swept in a road series this year. They'll need to win tonight to continue that trend.
Low scoring...
Friday's 3-2 loss was the 16th time the Freedom have scored fewer than three runs in a game. They are 1-15 in such games. When the Freedom score three or more runs they have a record of 20-11.
Road woes...
Florence is 5-14 away from UC Health Stadium and they have not won a road series yet on the season, dropping all seven series they have played on the road.
Excellent Eberle...
All-Star Sam Eberle leads the Freedom in On-Base Percentage at .430. He also leads the team in multiple hit games with 15.
One is good, six is bad...
The Freedom have out-scored opponents 37-20 in the first inning this season. It's the most runs they've scored in a particular inning this season and their largest positive run differential in an inning. However, they have been out-scored by a count of 32-17 in the sixth inning this season, their largest negative run differential of any inning.
Walk this way...
All-Star Joe Staley leads the team and is fourth in the Frontier League in walks with 35.
Hey now, you're an All-Star!
Outfielder Cole Miles, catcher Joe Staley and RHP Chuck Weaver were named Frontier League All-Stars on Monday. Miles and Staley will start for the east division in the July 16 game in Sauget, IL. Infielder Sam Eberle was named to the east division All-Star squad on Thursday.
